that it stopped in front of a refreshment stall
With great honour I was made to sit on a chair
I saw that the holy water of wisdom was
being served there
The owner offered the holy water so that I could feel rejuvenated and refreshed
And I started my journey again liberated afresh
At the last stop I thought I had reached heaven
But I found myself at the same stop from where I had started with the bags , seven
The driver told me that heaven is not located at a distant place
Heaven is your home on the earth without the unneeded baggage. Cheema's three poems together trace a spiritual journey from perseverance and self-examination to transcendence. Just Walk On places truth at its centre, urging us to remain faithful to our convictions amid temptation, misunderstanding, and adversity. At the Time of Homecoming uses the metaphors of the “school” and “homecoming” to reflect on human desire, pride, and ignorance, expressing a longing for spiritual purity. The Highway to Heaven employs the image of “baggage” to symbolise comparison, expectation, desire, vanity, and ego, which must be relinquished one by one before inner peace can be attained. Together, the poems combine accessible language with philosophical depth, embodying religious reflection, humanistic concern, and a sustained exploration of life, faith, and spiritual freedom.(Christine Chen)

却终遭放逐;

男子另娶如常;

竟沦为欺凌的利器;

却背弃生命的源头;

THIS SOCIETY IS SPOILED

World has been created because of Women
Yet, Women gets criticized
Falsehood of this society stinks
…it’s a spoiled society
Sita is banishedfor loving Ram
The male-heart is stinkingly blackened
…it’s a spoiled society
Upon divorce, remarrying wife
Yet, it’s the Woman who is sent to another*
Spoiled! ...it’s a spoiled society
Social-parasites misuse the ‘three words’
It’s the Women who is punished
Spoiled! ...it’s a spoiled society
Creation embarking from the very navel
Yet, denying the same naval-root
tortureand embarrassment
humiliates women,
The male principles,
arefalse…
Spoiled!
...it’s a spoiled society

[Translations by Iqbal Husain]

Indifference

Like a traveler lost in the maze
I knocked your door,
for love, perhaps,
or empathy, at least.
Your narcissistic heart —
self-absorbed always —
remained unaware —
someone knocked your door
at times hard and loud,
one day softly, in a subtle way.
(Translator by prof Ahmed reza)

Editorials:

Talukdar Lovely poetry is marked by a strong awareness of social criticism and a deep concern for women. This Society Is Spoiled centres on women’s circumstances, patriarchal structures, and social injustice. Through images of Sita, marriage, and the “three pronouncements of divorce,” the poet transforms individual suffering into a profound questioning of social institutions. Indifference, by contrast, turns inward: through the simple yet evocative image of “knocking at the door,” it conveys the longing for love, expectation, and the loneliness that follows neglect.
The two poems thus move in opposite but complementary directions—one outward toward society, the other inward toward the self—revealing a writer who dares to confront reality, speaks for the vulnerable, and regards literature as a form of social responsibility. In the context of her long-standing commitment to creating from lived social experience despite continuing to face controversy, her work demonstrates a distinctive realist courage and a deeply humanistic spirit.(Christine Chen)
