They run arts and crafts workshops, origami fest, music recitals, rehabilitating old houses, therapeutic dog visits, food pantries, and picking up trash on highways.

Terry Tao, a senior at the William Mason High School, is currently Vice President of the Bethany Group. He joined in 2013 as a freshman, "for volunteer hours required to earn a high school honor diploma and to have fun at the same time", he said. Tao has also grown his leadership skills, has since moved his way up from team member to event leader, has recruited five people in high school and become Bethany’s Vice President. He said that his favorite activity is the music recital at senior centers because he plays a lot of music with the piano and cello along with other kid musicians.

Music Recital by The Bethany Group at the Barrington Senior Center, Halloween 2015, hosted by Terry Tao; Cast with Tao and Chang, 3rd and 4th from the Right at Back Row

"I think that the Bethany Group has made a difference because we have music recitals, pick up trash at the highways, do all kinds of big fundraisers for the needy, and make cards for the elderly. I think it just really helps cheer up folks", he said. If he could come up with another activity to enable people to help around the community, he "would make it have something to do with athletics", Tao said.

Leon Chang, a freshman in Mason High, participated in the Adopt-A-Highway for the first time on April 16th, 2017. Chang was recruited by sophomore Alan Guo. They went to the Interstate 71 highway. Chang’s favorite part was that "it was just really fun to work with other people, and to pretend it was a competition to see who could finish their stretch of the highway first." Chang would do this again because "it’s a cool way to help out the community, and it’s also a great way to enjoy the weather, "quoted Chang. Thanks to these students, the highway was able to receive clean care for once! All kinds of trash were picked up, from tire pieces to a wallet with a fake ID in it.

Adopt A Highway by The Bethany Group, April 2017, led by Alan Guo; Guo and Chang, 1st and 2nd from the Left

So, how can you help out in your community? Maybe you could try volunteering with the Bethany Group or your local organizations that do great things with a kind heart! Let’s all make a difference to make this world a better place!

Kid Reporter: Vivian Chang, 4th Grader of Mason Intermediate School
