The monarch (that is, the king) of Jin was called Jin Xiangong, and he had a capable minister named Jie Zitui.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">一伙奸臣要谋害晋献公的大儿子重耳，介子推知道了这件事，就保护着重耳离开晋国逃亡去了。</p><p class="ql-block">A group of treacherous officials wanted to murder Jin Xiangong's eldest son Chong'er. Knowing this, Jie Zitui protected Chong'er and left Jin to flee.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">逃亡的生活很苦。他们已经好几天吃不上饭了。重耳饿得头晕眼花。介子推见了，把自己腿上的肉割下一块，烧熟了给他吃。</p><p class="ql-block">Life on the run is very hard. They have been out of food for several days. Chong’er was dizzy with hunger. When Jie saw it, he cut off a piece of meat from his leg and cooked it for the prince to eat.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">重耳吃了还想吃，问介子推肉是从哪里来的。介子推挽起裤腿，重耳这才知道是吃了他的肉。</p><p class="ql-block">Chong’er ate it and wanted to have more. He asked Jie Zitui where did he get the meat. Jie Zitui rolled up his trouser, and then Chong’er realized that he had eaten Jie Zitui’s meat.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">重耳感动得流下眼泪。介子推说：“我不求公子报答，但愿你将来能成为一个清明的国君。”</p><p class="ql-block">Chong’er was moved to tears. Jie Zitui said: "I don't ask the prince to repay me, I hope you can become a Qing (clear) Ming (bright) monarch in the future."</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">十几年后，重耳果然当上了晋国国君。</p><p class="ql-block">After more than a decade, Chong'er really became the Monarch of Jin.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">重耳把跟他去逃亡的人都封了大官，独独忘了介子推。</p><p class="ql-block">Chong'er rewarded those who fled with him to become high ranking officials, but forgot Jie Zitui alone.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">有人提起了介子推，重耳马上想起了过去的事，他觉得把恩人忘了很不应该，立刻派人去请。</p><p class="ql-block">Someone mentioned Jie Zitui. Chong’er immediately remembered the past. He felt that it was inappropriate to forget the benefactor and immediately sent someone to invite Jie.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">请了几次，介子推也不肯来。重耳只好亲自到他家去请。</p><p class="ql-block">After several invitations, Jie Zitui refused to come. Chong'er had to go to his house personally to invite.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">邻居说，介子推背着他的老母亲躲进绵山里去了。</p><p class="ql-block">The neighbor said that Jie Zitui carried his old mother on his back and went to the Mian mountain.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">重耳叫士兵在山上前前后后地找，介子推背着老母亲前前后后地躲。</p><p class="ql-block">Chong'er asked the soldiers to search up and down the mountain, while Jie Zitui carried his mother on his back to hide.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">有人给重耳出主意，如果从三个方向烧山，介子推准会背着老母亲从没有火的那一边走出来。</p><p class="ql-block">Someone gave Chong'er an idea to burn the mountain from three sides, Jie Zitui carrying his mother on his back would surely walk out of the mountain from the side where there was no fire.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">火烧起来了，火苗噼噼叭叭地响，把天都映红了，可就不见介子推出来。</p><p class="ql-block">The fire was ignited. Flames blared loudly, making the sky red, but without Jie Zitui coming out.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">过了两天，山火熄了，士兵们上山寻找，这才发现介子推和他的老母亲已经在一株大柳树旁烧死了。</p><p class="ql-block">Two days later, the wildfire burned out, and the soldiers went to the mountain to search, only to find that Jie Zitui and his old mother had burned to death beside a big willow tree.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">重耳见了，不由得大哭起来。</p><p class="ql-block">Chong’er saw it, and couldn't help but wailed.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">士兵们安葬了介子推和他的老母亲。重耳规定这一天禁烟火，吃寒食(就是不生火做饭，吃冷的东西），纪念介子推。以后，这一天就定为寒食节。</p><p class="ql-block">The soldiers buried Jie Zitui and his old mother. Chong'er stipulates that day with a ban on fire and eat cold food (that means people can not light a fire to cook and have to eat cold food) to commemorate Jie Zitui.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">第二年寒食节后的第一天，重耳又来到绵山上那株大柳树下，发现被火烧过的柳树又活了，他珍爱地折了几根柳条儿。</p><p class="ql-block">The following year, the day after the Cold Food Festival, Chong’er went back to the big willow tree on Mian Mountain and found out that the willow tree burned by the fire was alive again. He folded a few wicker twigs preciously.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">重耳把柳枝编成个圈儿，戴在头上，表示对介子推的纪念。他想起介子推曾经劝他当清明的官，就封那棵树为“清明柳”，还把这一天定为清明节。</p><p class="ql-block">Chong'er weaves the willow branches into a wreath and wears it on his head as a memorial to Jie Zitui. He remembered that Jie Zitui had once persuaded him to become a Qing Ming (clear and bright) monarch, so he named the tree the "Qing Ming Willow" and designated this day as the Qing Ming Festival.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">重耳没有忘记介子推对他的期望。他把国家治理得很好，百姓们都拥护他。</p><p class="ql-block">Chong'er has not forgotten the expectation of Jie Zitui. He governs the country very well, and the people support him.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block">从这以后，清明节的风俗就一代一代地传下来了。每到这一天，人们就去扫墓。</p><p class="ql-block">From then on, the customs of Qing Ming Festival have been passed down from generation to generation.
