FLL Regionals - by Kevin Li

风酥雨忆

Some of you might know what FLL stands for, First Lego League. This is a robotics competition where you use your robot to do tasks, but it’s not all about robotics.

Each year, the people who run FLL notify everyone what the project part of FLL will be about. This year it was about animals. Our team chose bees. The reason we chose bees is because, millions of bees are dying each year. Our mission was to save the bees. Another aspect about FLL is that you have to do Core Values. Core Values is basically teamwork and grit. We have to work together and overcome challenges. The last part of FLL is robot design. In robot design, you tell people about your robot and what it does.

This is where the story begins. Our team was in the regional competition. This was a competition of the best of the best in Kansas. Only two teams could advance to the world festival.

First we had a practice round, it went better than we expected. We got 102 points! But that was just a practice round so that didn’t count. Then there was the judging part of the competition. We had to show the judges our core values, robot design, and project. We thought we did pretty good. After that, we had the opening ceremony where we got to meet all the teams. Then there was the first robot run. It was pathetic. We score 24 points. I guess that kind of boosted our confidence, because we could learn from our mistakes. We were right, we got the most we had ever gotten, a 159! We were so happy. We were third place in the robot game leader board. But after a few more robot runs, we were dropped down to 5th. Our last run didn’t go very well, we only scored 96 points. After that, I had to go to a basketball game. I was at home, when my dad said that our team had gotten the inspiration award for core values. Even thought we didn’t go to the world festival, we got an award.
