The ring further decorated with a pair of open work addorsed dragons, each entwined around half the ring in a mirror image the other, the scrolled and hooked appendages of the dragons forming loops along the inner and outer edges of the ring. The lustrous, white, semi-translucent stone with some opaque inclusions and burial adhesions.

This jade ring displays superb craftsmanship. The dragons are carved in such a way that they appear to be moving, twisting in and out of the ring. The soft rounded edges give the carving a luxurious feel and look. A Warring States ring of similar design in the collection of the Zibo Museum, Shandong Province, China, was excavated from tomb no. I at Shangwang Village in Zibo county, Shangdong province and is illustrated in Gu Fang, The Complete collection of Unearthed Jades in China-Shangdong, Beijing,2005, p.196. Other examples of openwork rings with mythical creatures in the Museum of the Western Han Dynasty Mausoleum of the Nanyue King, are illustrated in Lu Zhaoyin, Zhongguo yuqi quanji, vol. 4, 1993, pls. 50 and 51, pp. 40-41.

文献源于:芝加哥亚洲艺术遗产博物馆

《鸟兽与礼器》
