It is not merely a weapon for personal defense, but a tangible symbol of status and refined taste among the aristocracy over two thousand years ago.

The object is meticulously structured, consisting of a bronze blade and a jade hilt. The bronze portion features clean, upright lines, with a raised central ridge (spine) that enhances its strength. Although the blade has acquired a mottled patina through oxidation over time, it still retains an air of sharpness and authority. In contrast to the cold hardness of the bronze, the jade hilt is warm, lustrous, and semi- translucent.

Gracefully curved, the jade handle is adorned with finely executed relief carvings of grain patterns (also known as cloud motifs). These small, spiraling designs are arranged in orderly repetition, symbolizing"the vitality of all living things" and "abundant harvests." Within the ritual culture of the time, such motifs held profound sacred significance. This combination of bronze and jade reflects not only the sophistication of metal and stone craftsmanship, but also an aesthetic ideal that harmonizes martial strength with cultivated elegance. Every contour and carved detail speaks to the grandeur and prestige of the nobility during the Eastern Zhou period.

文献源于:芝加哥亚洲艺术遗产博物馆

《鸟兽与礼器》
