The surface is densely incised with rhythmic parallel lines, creating a textural effect that reinforces the overall visual structure. The figure gazes outward through a large, prominent eye, its form drawing from the visual vocabulary of the Taotie motif to convey a powerful sense of awe and symbolic significance. Despite its compact size, the composition is imbued with ritualistic expressive power, blending geometric abstraction with figurative representation.

This rare iconography finds parallels in the artistic language of Shang dynasty bronzes, particularly in the highly stylized facial structures and exaggerated eyes that served both decorative and ritual functions. A closely related jade figure in profile with a headdress was unearthed from Tomb M331 at Xiaotun, Anyang, and is now held in the collection of the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica(Accession No. R009118). The stone is of an opaque quality, marked by dark brown calcification and russet mottling.

文献源于:芝加哥亚洲艺术遗产博物馆

《鸟兽与礼器》
