Its substantial head features meticulous detailing, including wide, open eyes that convey an alert yet poised demeanor. Deeply incised, curving lines delineate the nose, accentuating both its volumetric form and ornamental character. The upward- curving horns bear elegant scroll motifs, infusing the piece with symbolic resonance. A perforation through the mouth suggests it was designed for suspension, likely serving as a personal ornament or apoptotic talisman.

This jade animal figure exemplifies a key innovation in Shang dynasty craftsmanship, showcasing advanced carving techniques and profound symbolic intent. The stylized horn decoration and eye treatment echo motifs from Shang bronze vessels, linking the work to ritual and ceremonial contexts through abstracted animal forms. By blending naturalistic anatomy with stylized embellishments, the sculpture achieves a sophisticated equilibrium between empirical observation and emblematic design. The suspension hole underscores its practical ritual function-beyond mere display tied to status display or protective rites.

文献源于:芝加哥亚洲艺术遗产博物馆

《鸟兽与礼器》
