Introduction to the Watercolor Works of Julia Barminova

By Weirui (Sun Xiaoli)

Julia Barminova is a contemporary watercolor artist based in Moscow, Russia, with a background in higher education for architectural art and design. Years of rigorous training in the architectural system have endowed her with a profound understanding of spatial perspective, structural order, light and shadow logic, and visual deformation. This gives her a rational aesthetic and strict modeling ability that distinguishes her from traditional painters. In 2012, the artist officially transitioned to full-time watercolor creation. Using the rationality of architecture as her backbone and the spirituality of water-based media as her soul, she breaks free from the saccharine clichés and rigid depictions of formulaic landscape painting. She focuses on exploring the authentic state of water and light in nature, forging a free, pure, and uniquely personal artistic path.

Since 2014, Barminova has been engaged in the long-term creation of her classic representative series, Islands of Flowing Water. Traveling to numerous waterfronts, harbors, and water cities, she continuously observes the rhythm of waves, the refraction of light, and the flux of tides. Taking nature as her teacher and flowing water as her mirror, her featured works in thisinclude Morning Gondola in Venice, Boat Shadows in Blue Waves: Venice Waterfront, Deep Blue Harbor Mooring, Rippling Broken Light: Quiet Pier, Slight Waves on the Blue Sea: Solitary Boat by the Shore, Glacial Blue Sea: Polar Water Light, Shallow Waves by the Port: Refraction of Sunlight, and Blue Waves: Sunset Pier. These works comprehensively present her mature, stable, and highly recognizable artistic system of seascape watercolors.

The greatest charm of her painting lies in her deep respect for, thorough understanding of, and skillful application of the intrinsic language of watercolor. Well-versed in the medium's natural tendencies—such as coloring with water, achieving rhythm while wet, and creating ethereal transparency—she controls the spirit of her paintings entirely through the rhythm of wet and dry states on the paper. She uses large-scale wet-on-wet washes to lay down the base colors of the sea and sky, allowing the water and pigments to blend and diffuse naturally, resulting in a clear, transparent, and harmonious whole. When the paper reaches a semi-dry critical state, she uses crisp, dry-brush texturing to refine the layers of fine waves, broken light, and ripples. This achieves an excellent rhythm where the grand scene is ethereal and quiet, while the details are vivid, fully demonstrating the naturally relaxed and unrepeatable poetic quality of water-based painting.

In terms of color expression, the artist adheres to the pure discipline of watercolor—building up layers through thin glazes and light washes. She abandons gaudy decorations, instead using low-saturation, advanced color palettes such as blue-green, gray-blue, ultramarine, and cool green to construct a unified, elegant water-color system. Her tones are restrained, clean, and tranquil, possessing an inherently calm and healing artistic temperament.

Technically, she breaks through the rigid and stereotypical reflection paradigms of traditional watercolors, exploring a dynamic water-light language where "shadows shift with the waves." Relying on the laws of physical optics and fluid perspective, she allows the reflections of boats, shores, and stakes to bend with the ripples, scatter with the broken waves, and deform with the flowing water. This imbues static images with a sense of flowing breath, authentically restoring the ever-changing natural vitality of light and shadow on water. Her compositions are minimalist, ethereal.

Shengdian Art Studio by

Lai Mingdian
