(Quo Vadis)

(Spartacus)

(Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage)

The Colosseum (officially the Flavian Amphitheatre) is the largest amphitheatre ever built and the most iconic surviving monument of ancient Rome.

Construction began around 70–72 CE under Emperor Vespasian on the site of Nero’s private lake in the Domus Aurea. It was inaugurated in 80 CE by his son Titus with 100 days of games, and Domitian later added the fourth story. It was funded in part by plunder from the sack of Jerusalem and built largely by enslaved labor.

The elliptical structure measures about 189 by 156 meters and originally stood roughly 48–50 meters high. It could hold an estimated 50,000–80,000 spectators, who entered through 80 numbered arches and could exit in minutes thanks to an efficient system of vomitoria. A retractable awning (velarium) provided shade, operated by sailors.

It hosted gladiatorial combats, animal hunts, executions, and even mock naval battles in its early years. Games continued for centuries until they faded in the 5th–6th centuries. After the fall of the Western Empire it was used as a fortress, quarry, and later a Christian site of memory. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, drawing millions of visitors each year.

The exterior still shows the three tiers of arches (Doric, Ionic, Corinthian) plus the attic story. Much of the outer wall on one side is gone, stripped for building materials over the centuries.

Inside, the arena floor is gone, exposing the hypogeum — the two-level underground network of tunnels, cages, and elevators that once lifted animals and scenery into the arena.

The Colosseum remains a powerful symbol of Roman engineering, imperial spectacle, and the city’s layered history. Want details on visiting, the hypogeum tours, reconstructions, or how it compared to other Roman amphitheatres?
