It was lively, friendly, and looked up at us with such curiosity that we couldn’t help stopping for a moment to interact with it.</p><p class="ql-block">This simple encounter added a warm, everyday touch to our visit to Amazon’s modern and high-tech campus. Starbucks was founded in Seattle in 1971, and the well-known store at 1912 Pike Place moved to this location in 1976. It still features the original-style brown twin-tailed siren logo.</p><p class="ql-block">We joined the queue, went inside, bought a coffee, enjoyed it there, and took some photos to remember the moment. Although the store is small, its connection to the early history of Starbucks makes it very special. Founded in 1992, this popular bakery is known for its Eastern European-style handheld pastries, combining traditional recipes with local Pacific Northwest flavours.</p><p class="ql-block">The small bakery is often surrounded by the irresistible aroma of freshly baked pastries, and long queues are a common sight. We joined the line and tried several of their popular selections, including the signature Smoked Salmon Pâté Piroshky. Today, the district still preserves many late-19th-century red-brick buildings, carved stone arches, and historic streets. Seeing some locals playing, I couldn’t resist joining in.</p><p class="ql-block">Although we came from different places and had never met before, once the paddles were in our hands, language no longer seemed important. After just a few rallies, the atmosphere became relaxed and friendly, filled with laughter and the sound of the ball bouncing across the table.</p><p class="ql-block">For me, it was more than just a casual game of table tennis. It was one of those unexpected travel moments that made the day especially memorable. One of them was the Maynard Building, constructed in 1892 and originally built as a bank. Its brick façade, arched windows, and fine architectural details reflect the period when Seattle was rapidly rebuilding and expanding after the Great Fire.</p><p class="ql-block">What impressed us most was the contrast between these historic buildings and Seattle’s modern skyline. The city is not only about skyscrapers and technology; its old streets still preserve traces of more than a century of history. To our surprise, the old town was much closer to the waterfront than we had expected. Just across the road was the very area we had visited on our first day in Seattle.</p><p class="ql-block">Even more delightfully, we recognized the same ice cream shop where we had stopped on that first day. The familiar sight immediately brought back those earlier memories, so naturally, we went in once again and treated ourselves to another ice cream.</p><p class="ql-block">Sometimes the most enjoyable moments in travel are not about discovering somewhere new, but unexpectedly returning to a familiar place. Chihuly Garden and Glass revealed the extraordinary power of artistic imagination, while the Seattle Central Library reflected the city’s respect for knowledge and culture. At Pike Place Market, flying fish, colourful flowers, coffee, freshly baked pastries, and local artists filled the streets with energy and everyday life.</p><p class="ql-block">Yet some of our fondest memories came from the unexpected moments in between. We interacted with beautiful macaws by the waterfront, played table tennis with local Americans in a small park, and met a friendly little dog near Amazon’s headquarters. After wandering through the historic district, we unexpectedly found ourselves back at the waterfront and returned to the same ice cream shop we had visited on our first day. Our ferry trips to Bremerton and Bainbridge Island also gave us a different perspective, watching Seattle’s skyline slowly fade into the distance across Puget Sound.</p><p class="ql-block">Perhaps this is what travel is really about—not simply visiting famous attractions, but making unexpected connections with people, places, and everyday life along the way.</p><p class="ql-block">Seattle left us with an impression of openness, creativity, natural beauty, and warmth.
