Daniel Lee

Seoul Street Adventures: A "Rare Species" Companion's Shopping Chronicle

Yesterday, this "full-time shopping companion" reported for duty once again. My mission: to stick close to my 2 queens & sweep through the streets of Seoul without missing a step.

Honestly, I'd already sensed something was "off" the moment I stepped out of the airport the day before yesterday. But after 2 days & 2 nights of on-the-ground "research," I can finally declare with full confidence: at least 80% of tourists in Seoul are female. Men? They're like rare cameo appearances.

1st stop: we took uber & stormed Hannam-dong. Wow! This place is the very definition of "vibes"! Standalone cafes & designer boutiques hide in the alleys like they're playing hide-and-seek, each one practically begging "come take my picture," with a style so unique it makes you want to spin around on the spot.

Next, we pivoted to Seongsu-dong, where the scene suddenly shifted, where industrial edge crashing into artistic softness. Korean flagship stores lined up one after another, but every single one was selling things that make girls' hearts flutter.

My wife looked like she'd fallen into a honey jar, my daughter's eyes were sparkling, and they each bought all kinds of accessories & clothes. My wife, in particular, snapped photos until her phone overheated. As for me? I was in charge of carrying bags & smiling.

The night before, on Myeongdong walking street, I naively thought the "2:8 male-to-female ratio" was just a Myeongdong quirk. But yesterday, standing in the streets of Hannam-dong & Seongsu-dong, I started to wonder: is there even 5% male presence here?!

Every now & then, I'd spot a guy on the right, dutifully trailing behind his girlfriend with shopping bags in hand; or a warrior on the left, dragging 2 kids along while his wife strolled & snacked carefree — yeah, that scene felt all too familiar. I get it.

I used to think Myeongdong was "Planet Female." But after yesterday's eye-opening experience, I hereby declare: Seongsu-dong is the ultimate paradise!

Funny thing is, I went for my morning run for 1 hour, 10,000 steps. Then I accompanied the shopping spree for 9 hours, also 10,000 steps. So why did the latter feel like I'd run a marathon?! My feet were practically protesting.

Back at the hotel by 9 pm, the queens didn't exactly return with arms full of loot. But the smiles on their faces was brighter than if they'd bought out the whole street.

As for me, I was secretly delighted, because their happiness is mine too. It's just that the "exhaustion filter" on my face was impossible to hide..
