Chapter 1|

Opening – The Journey Begins

EN: Space is unimaginably vast. Thanks to our curiosity and desire for knowledge, humans are driven to explore space and learn more about the universe. Yet there is still so much more to discover. We are going on a journey further out into space than any other human being has ever been before. Everything we are going to see on our journey is based on real data collected thanks to mankind's technological progress and many years of research.

Low Earth Orbit – International Space Station

EN: Many satellites and spacecraft orbit our planet Earth. The International Space Station, or ISS, is one of them. It orbits approximately four hundred kilometres above the Earth's surface, at a tremendous speed of twenty-eight thousand kilometres per hour. It takes ninety minutes for the ISS to travel one lap around our planet. The space station is a fantastic project of international collaboration. It has been permanently inhabited for more than twenty years—this is the only place outside Earth's atmosphere with a permanent human presence.

Satellites – GPS & Geostationary Orbit

EN: We have sent up thousands of satellites that travel around the Earth. Some of these satellites can be seen with the naked eye, as they travel across the sky before sunrise or after sunset. A little further out are the GPS navigation satellites. They send out synchronized time signals using atomic clocks on board. When we receive these signals on the ground, we can, by measuring the time differences between them, instantly calculate where on Earth's surface we are with just a few metres accuracy. The geostationary orbit is almost thirty-six thousand kilometres from Earth. These satellites travel around our planet in twenty-four hours, which means that they are stationary in the sky above us. We use them for satellite communication and television because we can point a fixed antenna towards one specific satellite.

Chapter 4|

The Moon – Apollo Landings

EN: In 1969, after many years of research and technological development, the first humans landed on the Moon. This is one of humanity's greatest achievements. Between 1969 and 1972 a total of twelve astronauts landed on the lunar surface, but since then no one has been here.

Chapter 5|

Mars – Our Next Destination

EN: However, humans will visit other places in the universe. It is just a matter of time. Here we have our neighbour Mars and its two moons—Phobos and Deimos. Mars is mankind's next destination. Travelling there will take at least six months, depending on how Earth and Mars line up with each other. We already know a lot about Mars thanks to the rovers that have landed on its surface and space probes that are in orbit around the planet.

Chapter 6|

The Outer Planets – Gas Giants & Asteroid Belt

EN: Beyond Mars lies the asteroid belt—a ring of rocky debris left over from the formation of the Solar System. Passing through it, we reach Jupiter, the largest planet in our Solar System. It is a gas giant, made mostly of hydrogen and helium, with a Great Red Spot—a storm larger than Earth that has raged for hundreds of years. Further out are Saturn with its spectacular rings, then Uranus and Neptune—ice giants at the edge of our Sun's domain.

Chapter 7|

Oort Cloud – Leaving the Solar System

EN: The Sun's gravitational influence extends far beyond the planets, out to the Oort cloud—a spherical shell of icy bodies marking the boundary of our Solar System, nearly a light-year from the Sun. Voyager 1 and 2, launched in the 1970s, have now crossed this threshold and are sending back data from interstellar space. We are leaving the Sun behind… and entering the realm of the stars.

Chapter 8|

The Milky Way – Local Group

EN: Our Sun is just one of hundreds of billions of stars in the Milky Way—a barred spiral galaxy some one hundred thousand light-years across, with a supermassive black hole at its centre. From above we see its spiral arms; from within, we see the glowing band of starlight that gave the galaxy its name. Our nearest large galactic neighbour is Andromeda, also part of the Local Group—a collection of more than fifty galaxies bound by gravity. In four billion years, the Milky Way and Andromeda will collide and merge.

Chapter 9|

Cosmic Web – Cosmic Microwave Background

EN: Zooming further out, galaxies cluster into filaments and walls, forming the cosmic web—the large-scale structure of the Universe. Eventually we reach the limit of the observable Universe: the Cosmic Microwave Background, or CMB. This faint glow is the remnant radiation from the hot, dense early Universe, released 380,000 years after the Big Bang, when the first atoms formed and light could finally travel freely through space. It is, quite literally, the oldest light we can see.

Chapter 10|

The Big Bang – The Beginning of Time

EN: We cannot see beyond the CMB—there is no light from before it. But if we look even further back in time, we reach the Big Bang, 13.8 billion years ago, when space, time, matter and energy themselves came into being in a rapid expansion. The Universe has been expanding and cooling ever since. We are the result of that moment—stardust, shaped by thirteen billion years of cosmic evolution, now curious enough to look back and ask: where did it all begin?
