When I was planning, US-Iran tensions were high, making a transit through China feel a lot more secure than flying via Dubai—plus, the flight deal was unbeatable. What started as a logistical compromise, however, turned out to be the perfect prologue.

My obsession with Istanbul didn’t come from guidebooks, but from the sweeping novels of Barbara Taylor Bradford. While the exact plots of family empires and betrayals have faded, one detail stuck: her characters always slipped away to Istanbul. Not for sightseeing, but for secrets. The city was painted as a place to broker deals in shadowed courtyards or lose oneself in ancient alleys. To me, Istanbul became a city that doesn't give up its stories easily. It waits. It watches.

That sense of mystery colored my anticipation as we left a grey winter sky in Melbourne.

For centuries, Istanbul was the western terminus of the Silk Road. Over the past 1,500 years, this magnificent structure has shed and adopted countless identities: an Eastern Orthodox cathedral, a Roman Catholic church, an imperial mosque, a museum, and now, once again, an active mosque. Standing outside these weather-beaten stone walls, I tried to process the sheer weight of history distilled here.

However, my sense of awe was quickly dampened by a splash of cold economic reality. The admission fee to access the second-floor gallery was staggeringly high, and when coupled with the equally steep ticket price for the nearby Basilica Cistern, I could practically feel my wallet aching. The system here operates on a stark dual-pricing structure—foreign tourists are charged a massive premium, while locals can enter for a mere fraction of the cost, or entirely free.

While I understand the mechanics of tourism economics, such a vast price gap did leave a slightly bitter taste of exclusion. Ultimately, the four of us decided to fully appreciate the majestic exteriors of these landmarks from the outside, letting their grand domes and courtyards tell their stories from beyond the walls, while keeping our Turkish Lira for things that a ticket booth cannot commodify.

We encountered the exact same situation at Topkapi Palace. We chose to gaze from afar through the imposing iron gates, imagining four centuries of Ottoman sultans, power struggles, and jeweled opulence against the backdrop of sprawling gardens and the distant, beautiful Bosphorus.

A Sanctuary for the Soul: The Blue Mosque

The true stirrings of the soul, however, came during our visit to The Blue Mosque. Unlike its neighbors, the Blue Mosque is completely free to enter, and perhaps because of this, it feels like the truest sanctuary of the city’s spirit. We walked through the vast courtyard and removed our shoes, and I wrapped my hair in a scarf I had brought all the way from Melbourne.

The moment I stepped past the heavy leather curtains and beneath the massive, cascading domes, my breath caught in my throat. My eyes darted in pure astonishment across the walls, adorned with over 20,000 handmade Iznik tiles intricately painted in shades of blue, red, and green. Soft, filtered light poured through 200 stained-glass windows, enveloping the immense space in a celestial, watery glow.

Here, there were no VIP areas, no fast-passes, and no premium viewing decks. There were only tourists gazing in silent reverence and worshippers murmuring low, soft prayers. This harmonious serenity instantly washed over me. All the anxiety of the journey, the chaos of the bazaars, and the frustration over ticket prices simply melted away into this quiet, blue ocean of peace.

A Little Sidelight: Lost in the Slumber of Ancient Alleys

On our very first night in Istanbul, our minds were practically buzzing with irrepressible excitement. After an entire day of exploring and a lovely dinner at a small roadside eatery, we decided to walk back to our hotel around nine in the evening. Guided by Google Maps, we confidently set off toward the ancient neighborhoods surrounding the Grand Bazaar.

However, the streets around us began to twist, narrow, and dim without us even realizing it. Before we could even process what was happening, we were completely and utterly lost in a labyrinth of absolute silence.

Every single shop had long since closed. Under the sparse, flickering glow of a few scattered streetlamps, the vibrant, colorful storefronts of the daytime shifted into ghostly shades of monochrome. The only sound was the occasional cry of a stray cat. The anxious patter of our footsteps echoed sharply against the cobblestones, sounding exactly like the background track of a horror movie. You can easily imagine what that scene looked like—and the state of mind I was in!

Just as my anxiety was reaching its absolute peak, we rounded a corner and spotted a man sitting all by himself in the shadows of a deserted street, casually smoking a cigarette. In a very low, blunt tone, he muttered in English: "Grand Bazaar is closed."

Anxious to shake off our unease, we didn't want to engage with him at all. We simply quickened our pace, blindly putting all our faith into the little blue dot on Google Maps. We kept pushing deeper into the maze, only to hit dead end after dead end. By this point, I was beginning to panic. The stranger’s cryptic warning finally clicked in my mind: as it turned out, all of these back alleys eventually fed into the Grand Bazaar. Because the bazaar was locked up for the night, every single path was a dead end that offered no way through. It was then we realized we could no longer follow Google Maps. Our only choice was to backtrack to where we started. As we passed that same street corner, the man was still sitting there, completely unfazed, the cherry of his cigarette glowing faintly in the dark.

I marched ahead at a brisk pace while my husband brought up the rear, sticking right behind me. Just as I was beginning to feel like we might be wandering through this nightmare until dawn, a miracle happened! Two blinding headlights suddenly illuminated the narrow walls. A bright yellow Istanbul taxi whipped around a sharp turn, pulling right into our alley!

I instantly went wild, waving my arms frantically to flag the car down. Pulling the door open, I incoherently sputtered the name of our hotel to the driver. As he navigated through a few more back alleys and finally burst onto a main road, the heavy boulder that had been crushing my chest finally lifted.

What we feared would turn into a full-blown thriller movie ultimately became a crazy, unforgettable midnight escape. As it turns out, modern-day Google Maps loses its value entirely within the ancient walls of Istanbul!

And that is where I will leave our Istanbul story for now! All in all, Istanbul left me with far more than just the sight of tourist landmarks, the taste of Turkish Delights, or the touch of silk scarves. More than anything, it left me with a profound spiritual stir—a core memory of what it truly feels like to be utterly lost, yet entirely resilient.

🍁Sue-舒🍂@Istanbul.
