The Sulphur Hill Fortress is known as "the Gibraltar of the West Indies" and is the largest and most well-preserved colonial military fortress in the Caribbean region. Soon after, Frenchman Pierre also established a settlement there. Its walls are made of 7-foot-thick black volcanic rock and are extremely sturdy. The bottom level houses barracks for foot soldiers, ammunition depots, granaries, and other logistical facilities; the middle level houses the command center and officers' quarters; the upper level is the main artillery platform.
