This is a World Heritage Site recognized by UNESCO. Standing on the ancient castle and looking out over the sea, you can witness the turbulent years of Caribbean colonization and naval battles.</p> <p class="ql-block">  硫磺山要塞国家公园,因山体形似硫磺而得名。硫磺山古堡被誉为“西印度群岛的直布罗陀”,是加勒比海地区规模最大、保存最完好的殖民军事要塞,1999年被评为世界文化遗产。</p><p class="ql-block">The Sulphur Hill Fortress National Park is named after the shape of the mountain resembling sulfur. The Sulphur Hill Fortress is known as "the Gibraltar of the West Indies" and is the largest and most well-preserved colonial military fortress in the Caribbean region. It was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1999.</p> <p class="ql-block"> 1493年,哥伦布在第二次航海中发现了圣基茨和尼维斯两个小岛,但西班牙并未占领。</p><p class="ql-block"> 1623年,英国人托马斯•沃纳爵士率殖民者来到圣基茨岛西岸,紧随其后,法国人皮埃尔也在此建立了定居点。从此,英、法的殖民之战持续了百年。</p><p class="ql-block">In 1493, Columbus discovered the two small islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis during his second voyage, but Spain did not occupy them.</p><p class="ql-block">In 1623, Sir Thomas Warner, an Englishman, led colonists to the west coast of Saint Kitts Island. Soon after, Frenchman Pierre also established a settlement there. Since then, the colonial wars between Britain and France lasted for a hundred years.</p> <p class="ql-block">  为了巩固殖民统治,英国人从1690年开始就动用大量非洲奴隶劳工,耗时近一个世纪建造了这座号称“西印度群岛的直布罗陀”的雄关。</p><p class="ql-block">In order to consolidate their colonial rule, the British began to employ a large number of African slaves as laborers as early as 1690. It took them nearly a century to build this formidable fortress, which was called "the Gibraltar of the West Indies".</p> <p class="ql-block">  要塞建在圣基茨岛上,占地15公顷,墙体由7英尺厚的黑色的岩浆岩石构成,非常坚固,是典型的英国式堡垒。</p><p class="ql-block">The fortress is located on the island of Saint Kitts and covers an area of 15 hectares. Its walls are made of 7-foot-thick black volcanic rock and are extremely sturdy. It is a typical British-style fortress.</p> <p class="ql-block"> 堡垒内设博物馆,可参观的景观有医院、军火库、炮官居所、王子威尔士堡垒以及乔治城堡根据地。</p><p class="ql-block">Inside the fortress, there is a museum. The attractions that can be visited include the hospital, the armory, the residence of the gun commander, Prince Wales Fortress, and the George Castle base.</p> <p class="ql-block">  要塞整体布局依山势分为三层,底层是土兵营房、军火库、粮仓等后勤设施;中层是指挥中心和军官住所;上层是主炮台,曾架设超过40门加农炮,现存24门大炮面向大海,景色震撼。</p><p class="ql-block">The overall layout of the fortress is divided into three levels according to the terrain. The bottom level houses barracks for foot soldiers, ammunition depots, granaries, and other logistical facilities; the middle level houses the command center and officers' quarters; the upper level is the main artillery platform. It once had over 40 cannons, and currently, 24 large cannons face the sea, presenting a breathtaking view.</p> <p class="ql-block"> 如今,硫磺石山要塞国家公园已被联合国列为世界文化遗产,供后人凭吊这段硝烟弥漫的过去。</p><p class="ql-block">Today, the Sulfur Hill Fortress National Park has been listed as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations, serving as a place for future generations to pay their respects to this tumultuous past.</p> <p class="ql-block">END</p>
