The programme, called Stories of the World – East of England, has been endorsed as a major project in the Cultural Olympiad for the London 2012 Olympics. In early 2010 the Fitzwilliam Museum will host a residency of Chinese artist Chen Hong, the well-known 'Fish King', and afterwards he will travel to other museums in the region. Further cultural exchanges with China will be encouraged in the lead up to the Olympic Games.

In Cambridge, the climax of all these activities will, we hope, be the staging of the most important exhibition of Han cultural material ever seen outside the People's Republic of China. The exhibition, Tomb Treasures of Han China, is planned to run for six months from March–August 2012. It presents an unprecedented opportunity to highlight Han Chinese culture, art, religious beliefs and daily life through the spectacular discoveries in the tombs of the Western Han Period (206BC–8AD).

The Han initiative has been a major priority for the University of Cambridge in its 800th year, and has the full support of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alison Richard, who describes the planned exhibition as a 'significant milestone in the University's engagement with China, and of first importance in promoting wider understanding of a little-known period of Chinese history whose legacy is so central to our understanding the China of today'.
