一是运用 MIDI 音乐配置出非常浓郁、具有艺术感染力的和声织体,营造出很好的音乐氛围;

二是加入民族乐器琵琶与二胡,并且使其演奏的音色与伴奏的织体融为一体,特别是二胡与琵琶的音色有着很好的质地,这已经超出了一般 MIDI 制作的水平,所以他们的成功是必然的;

My performance of Jincheng Past is a bit different from other dizi versions in three main ways.

First, I use two dizi of different keys: what we traditionally call a bangdi and a qudi. These two different keys offer distinct timbres, tone qualities, and styles. In just about five minutes, they allow me to present different emotions, moods, and colors in the dizi music through contrast. This creates a kind of “color comparison” in the sound, which is a very distinctive aspect of this performance.

Second, I have a special affection for the melodic style of this piece. When I was a child, I often heard the famous singer Guo Lanying perform songs such as People Say Shanxi Has Beautiful Scenery and the Shanxi folk song Jiaocheng Mountain, as well as the dizi piece Walking West. The melodic materials and motifs in these works are closely related to those in Jincheng Rhapsody. In addition, I grew up often accompanying Shandong folk songs on the dizi and became very familiar with that style. Shanxi and Shandong lie to the west and east of China respectively; although they do not share a border, they are closely connected in terms of geography and culture, and there is a certain kinship in their melodies and styles. This gives me a very natural, intimate emotional connection when I perform this piece.

Third, at the end of the piece, I extend a high note instead of the original low note. This small change symbolizes the passage of time and is a kind of creative . One note can make a world of difference: with this high note, the ending feels more lingering and reflective.

Of course, the success of this work is largely due to the creative collaboration between Mr. Chen Fei and Gao Yang. They designed an excellent musical texture and accompaniment, which can be divided into three main parts:

1️⃣ They used MIDI to create a rich and artistically expressive harmonic texture, which establishes a very strong musical atmosphere.

2️⃣ They added the pipa and erhu, integrating their timbres beautifully with the accompaniment texture. The sound quality of the erhu and pipa is particularly fine, and this is far beyond an ordinary MIDI production level, so their success is well deserved.

3️⃣ They matched the music with excellent visuals, using video to show the ancient historical buildings and cultural atmosphere of Jincheng. Together with this music, it achieves a deeply moving, almost tear‑inducing artistic effect. I really have to give them a big thumbs up — they did an outstanding job.

At home, I used just one microphone and a small recorder to add my dizi performance to this accompaniment. Every time I play it, I feel a kind of trembling in my heart and a spiritual elevation. The ancient history and culture of the Chinese land, especially in a region like Shanxi, move me deeply. Someone once said that Shanxi’s music is so touching, beautiful, and soulful because it is the backbone of the Chinese nation. This sentence moves me very much. Yes, the ancient culture of China is truly inspiring; it is eternal and great.

And so, I offer this dizi performance of Jincheng Past to you all.
