New Vessels for Ancient Rhymes, Fivefold Blessings in Their Prime.

"Five Blessings Arrive": A Millennium of Blessing Rhyme in a Single Porcelain Cup

New Vessels for Ancient Rhymes, Fivefold Blessings in Their Prime.

Kou Fuping, a master ceramic artist and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in Chinese Ceramic Art, has recreated the ancient elegance of Shang and Zhou dynasty ritual vessels in his new work "Five Blessings Arrive," drawing upon nearly seventy years of dedicated craftsmanship. The piece is modeled after the ancient "zun" and "gu" vessels, refined into a three-section structure: a wide flared rim unfolds like clouds, a straight cylindrical body stands tall as bamboo, and a splayed foot rests solidly as a ceremonial tripod. Two raised bow-strings patterns run through the form, enhancing the rhythmic sense of the shape while infusing the vessel with the solemn dignity of the Bronze Age.

In the decorative expression, Master Kou employs a combination of carving and appliqué techniques to imbue the auspicious motifs with vibrant life. The upper section of the cup is adorned with swirling clouds through which two bats flutter gracefully; the main body features a centrally positioned bat with outstretched wings, complemented by two plump and rounded gourds on either side. The three-dimensional appliqué of the gourds not only enriches the fullness of the form but also creates a dynamic dialogue with the cloud and bat patterns above. The arrangement of three bats and two gourds subtly corresponds to the number of "Five Blessings," while the clever homophonic use of "bat" (蝠, fu) and "gourd" (葫, hu) crystallizes the wish for "happiness and prosperity" within a compact space.

This work continues Master Kou's characteristic fusion of traditional motifs with three-dimensional forms while demonstrating his masterful control over the material qualities of Jianbai porcelain. The glaze surface is as smooth and lustrous as fine jade, and the porcelain body is dense and uniform, emitting a soft, translucent quality under light. It is not merely an elegant object for the scholar's table but also a cultural symbol held in the palm of one's hand—carrying the profound connotations of millennia-old blessing culture while conveying the contemporary artisan's heartfelt wishes for a beautiful life.
