Original content: Ni Jie'er, Photography: Qianxi

In the 1960s and 1970s, there were no high-speed trains, and private cars were also scarce. For transportation, options included the clanging green-painted trains, the bumpy long-distance buses, the roaring tractors, or the noisy gasoline-powered boats and the creaking rowboats. In some cases, people even traveled on foot. When I was a child, I lived with my parents in Yuyao, Ningbo, while my grandparents lived in the countryside of Shaoxing, Shangyu. During the Spring Festival and during school vacations, I would eagerly look forward to going to my grandparents' house, but it required my parents to have free time to make the trip possible. The night before our departure, we would be so excited that we couldn't sleep, dreaming about missing our scheduled transportation and then waking up to continue sleeping until morning. My mother would shake me awake and say, "If you don't get up soon, you'll miss the bus!" We would suddenly wake up, full of joy and excitement, shouting and making noise.

The green-painted train clanged to a stop at the Wufu Station in Yu, and the next stop would see a rowboat waiting on the shore. The rhythmic sound of the oars carried us towards our grandmother's home. The water rippled gently, and the scenery on both banks gradually faded into the distance. From a distance, we could see our grandmother sitting quietly under an old cypress tree, waiting for us. When the boat reached the shore, she quickly approached, and we rushed into her arms. She tightly embraced us, calling us "dearest ones." As we prepared to leave, she continued to wave from under the tree, her figure growing more poignant against the backdrop of twilight. At that time, information about our journey was communicated orally, and our grandmother often waited for what seemed like an hour or even half a day. Despite the inconvenience, she was filled with joy. From that moment on, a deep connection was formed between me and the water towns, ancient bridges, and the rowboats.

The years have flowed like water, passing through the seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter over a span of more than half a century. From a naive child to a young and inexperienced individual, and then to a gentle young woman and a composed middle-aged person, I have experienced various stages of life. In the autumn of 2020, when I first set foot in Wuzhen, tears unexpectedly welled up in my eyes. Childhood memories flooded back like a tide: the water town, ancient bridges, rowing boats, the figure of my grandmother, the simplicity of blue floral fabric. A sense of familiarity and warmth spread through my heart – as if I had walked through the narrow alleys shrouded in morning mist and had leaned against the stone railing by the riverbank. The moment was captured by the camera, and thoughts flowed freely in my mind. The concept for the "Like Water Years" series of beautiful posts began to take shape quietly.

The beauty of Wuzhen is immersed in the flowing waters that have existed for thousands of years. A river has flowed through the town since ancient times, connecting the northern and southern parts of the town. Tributaries of the canal flow into the town from the northwest corner, sometimes forming rivers, then turning into harbors, and finally becoming lakes. These twists and turns create a complex network of waterways, intricately woven into the fabric of the town. Wuzhen was born from the water, with streets built along the water's edge and commerce flourishing by its side. Houses are built along the riverbanks, with residents enjoying the view of the blue waters from their windows; households collect water from their morning windows, with morning mist reflecting on the waves. Bridges lie across the water, connecting moments of casual conversation; boats navigate through the waves, carrying people back and forth throughout the day and night. The waterfront promenade is more than just a scenic spot; it's a place where people can sit or lie down, sharing stories about daily life and expressing their feelings. The gentle flow of the water mirrors the passage of time, a constant companion through the years.

The beauty of Wuzhen lies in the clear and soothing waters. The river in Xiazhai, with a width of no more than twenty meters, is surrounded by villages where the sounds of chickens and dogs can be heard, and the sights of daily life are inviting. Wooden chairs are placed at the foot of the walls, and stone steps meander towards the water, where boats with oars wait for passengers. Sitting alone in a flat-roofed boat with oars, one can reflect or simply let the mind wander. The gentle waves caress the heart, bringing a sense of tranquility. Wuzhen is the perfect place to lose oneself in thought. After allowing one's thoughts to settle, it feels as though the person has become a painting on the wall, a scene by the shore, and a shadow in the water, all of which blend seamlessly with the water-rich environment. This region is akin to a warm and smooth piece of jade from the south of the Yangtze River. After enduring the test of time and benefiting from the nourishment provided by the flowing water, it has developed an increasingly rich and profound charm.

The beauty of Wuzhen lies in the intricate interplay of bridges. There are no two identical bridges or leaves in the world; Wuzhen has no two identical bridges either. Since the Southern Song Dynasty, over 80 bridges have been constructed in a way that creates a harmonious landscape, making it akin to a "Museum of Ancient Water Bridges." Bridges with single openings, those with three openings, and stone arch bridges, each with its own unique character. Some are solemn and imposing, with moss creeping into the crevices, carrying the weight of time. Others are graceful and ethereal, with simple yet elegant lines, reminiscent of the free-hand brushwork in Chinese painting. Some are unassuming and plain, quietly lying across the river, much like an old farmer's handkerchief draped lightly over the river's edge. Above these stone bridges, there might be ancient pavilions, intricate carvings, or couplets inscribed on the bridges, each element revealing the gentle charm and refined elegance characteristic of the water-laced landscape.

The bridges in Wuzhen are like long scrolls hanging over the water. The stone arches embrace the mist over the river, embedding both separations and anticipated reunions within the crevices of the bridge. Some people have leaned on the railing, gazing intently at the water's surface. The tender gaze of a mother is intertwined with the sound of the oar. The silhouettes of ships leaving and returning, as well as the tips of oars, all blend into the vast expanse of the sky and water, leaving behind moss-covered marks on the bridge's railings. For the people of Wuzhen, bridges are not merely the endpoints of paths. They serve as stages where the joys and sorrows of countless years unfold; they act as anchors for homesickness, connecting the imagined river wharfs and wooden windows; and they are also the crossing points of the heart – from the railings, one can gaze out at the river, sending a lifetime's thoughts to the flowing water and returning boats.

The water market in the West Village section of Wuzhen is divided into two distinct areas by a wooden causeway—the causeway stretches across the West River. The barrels are painted a deep red and are placed along the sides of the boats, capturing the freshness from the surrounding countryside. The dried goods in the bamboo baskets emit a fragrant aroma. Grabbing a handful of these snacks fills the mouth with the unique flavor of the water town. The boats on the river: their deck planks are covered with bamboo screens. The oranges, the tender white radishes, and the deep purple sweet potatoes and yams contrast with the deep brown color of the wooden boats, creating a scene that is akin to moving fields into the center of the river. This is the morning scene in the West Village: the boats function as shops, and the water flows like a bustling street. Even the breeze carries the freshness of fruits and vegetables, transforming the traditional way of life into something ordinary and familiar.

Wuzhen was awakened by the rhythmic motion of the boat's oars. As the early light just began to soften the tiles at the eaves, long poles pierced through the misty river air, and the sound of the oars mixed with the moisture to converge at the waterfront. The wooden panels of the water pavilion were "creaking" as they were removed, and the copper stove in the teahouse started to heat up first. The steam from the tofu stall mingled with the fragrance of the tofu, spreading into the alleys. Next came the aroma of fried buns, followed by the warm fragrance of roasted chestnuts. The morning scent of the town—pan-fried dumplings with crispy edges, wontons floating in a broth, with a sprinkle of green onions adding a fresh, dew-like quality to each bowl. The teacups had just been warmed, and the boatwoman's Wu dialect floated down the river. The days in this water-laced town were awoken with the taste of freshness and the subtle aroma, creating a relaxed yet lively atmosphere.

The autumn light permeates the ridges of the tiles, and I lean against the flower-framed window of the water pavilion. The wooden lattice work is reminiscent of the patterns from previous years, like a chessboard softened by time, each section framing the cloud shadows on the river's surface. The green tiles at the eaves reflect the autumn sunlight, casting a thin, warm glow. Several leaves of the mulberry tree sway near the window ledge, half orange-yellow and half green, representing the imperfect stitches of the season. The river water appears as a solid green, imbuing the stone bridge, the old houses, and the rhythmic sound of the swaying oar with a soothing warmth. Even the breeze that passes carries a damp, misty quality—a characteristic feature of the region, imbued with the fragrance of osmanthus. At that moment, it seems as if a vital energy flows into the heart, filling the world with a sense of supreme beauty.

The saying in the "Tao Te Ching" that "the highest virtue is like water" is not merely a philosophical concept inscribed on bamboo slips or silk fabric; it embodies the essence of living in harmony with the world. That serene and clear body of water nurtures all things with a spirit of inclusiveness and accepts the vicissitudes of life with a gentle demeanor. Through the seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, it endures the trials of wind, frost, rain, and snow, always remaining calm and composed. Day and night, it navigates the transitions between tranquility and activity, maintaining a demeanor of harmony and non-conflict. The nature of water has shaped the character of the women of the Jiangnan region: gentle and nurturing towards loved ones, serene and capable of managing everyday life, and steadfast and unafraid of challenges. Water is not only the source of life but also awakens the human spirit and enhances personal character.

A five-year commitment led to a journey spanning thousands of miles. In the autumn of 2025, I finally fulfilled the invitation from the "sisterly duo" of Wujiang Zha in Wuzhen. Upon arriving, it became clear what it means to feel a sense of peace at first sight – Wuzhen exudes the gentle charm of Jiangnan's misty landscapes, while Wujiang Zha harbors the essence of the mountains and waters of the Qian region. It was as if reuniting with long-lost sisters. The reflections on the bridges, the lanterns illuminating the alleys, each detail resonates with the deep-seated desires in one's heart. The feelings of longing that transcend temporal boundaries, the restless anticipation, all find fulfillment in the harmonious blend of daily life and poetic beauty. This experience led to the creation of the series "Like Water Years" – the "Boat Travel" section, titled "A Single Rudder Brings Spring to Both Places."

Wujiang Zha, meticulously crafted by the team from Wuzhen. Both places are characterized by their connection with water, the role of bridges as intermediaries, and the charm of boats, embodying the gentle and poetic essence of southern China. However, Wujiang Zha stands out due to its unique blend of the local culture of northern Guizhou. Both locations are centered around a winding river, with the water mirroring the surroundings. Small boats glide effortlessly, and the buildings on both banks reflect in the water, creating a dynamic and picturesque scene. The water in Wuzhen is part of the broader network of rivers and canals in southern China, connecting to the vast waterways of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. The water in Wujiang Zha, on the other hand, is a tributary of the Wujiang River, characterized by the lush green hills and clear waters that can be seen from below, with pebbles visible beneath the surface. The area is further enhanced by mist-covered terraces and a synchronized water and music performance, blending natural water features with modern lighting effects to create a surreal and immersive experience.

The bridge between Wuzhen and Wjiangzhai is both a key node and a brilliant illustration of the water town network. They are mostly beautiful stone bridges, which contrast with winding rivers and wandering painting boats, as if they are poetry drawings unique to the water town. The ancient bridges in Wuzhen are numerous and of all kinds, and the bridges are carved with the lines of the years and have a rich aroma of fireworks. Wujiang Walled Bridge, then into the customs of northern Guizhou Gu Xue, wind and rain bridges and small stone slab bridge scattered in the meantime, often with the Diaojiaolou 22 Xiangying. Throughout the trip, you can both admire the breathtaking attitude of a bamboo float and see the brilliant scenery of a light show.

Both Wuzhen and Wujiang Zha rely on rowing boats as the carriers of the essence of the water-based landscape. To navigate through these areas on a small, flat boat is also a fundamental way to experience the unique charm of the water-based environment. As the boat glides across the water, the rhythmic sound of the oars creates a sense of timelessness. Being on the boat allows one to fully immerse themselves in the scenery on both sides, fully appreciating the refined charm of the water-based area. The rowing boats in Wuzhen were once used for practical purposes, with sturdy and reliable vessels. The boat sheds along the shore still exist, filled with memories of daily life. The rowing boats in Wujiang Zha are designed primarily for recreational purposes, enabling visitors to enjoy activities such as bamboo rafting and listening to folk songs. During nighttime tours, the interplay of lights and drone shows creates a unique and captivating atmosphere.

During the autumn immersion in the Wujiang Fort, the air was cool and imbued with moisture. A young woman dressed in a plain-colored, checkered cheongsam stood at the bow of the rowing boat, with an orange-colored oil paper umbrella shielding part of her silhouette against the clouds. This vibrant color blended seamlessly into the emerald waters, making it even softer than the wooden tones of the hanging-foot houses on both banks. The boat's oars creaked as they cut through the waves, causing the mountains of Qiannan to appear as a hazy green. The faint fragrance of plants and herbs wafted through the air, making one feel as though even their breathing was lightened. The distant Wind and Rain Bridge lay shrouded in mist, the overhanging eaves of the hanging-foot houses reaching towards the sky. As the boat moved, time seemed to slow down, much like the still waters of this river. Even the wind seemed to carry away the thoughts and concerns of those on board.

As the boat's hull brushed against the aquatic vegetation, delicate sounds were produced—these were the soft chirps of autumn insects hidden within the stems, mingled with the "thud" sound of the bamboo pole used by the boatmen as they maneuvered the vessel through the water. The checkered pattern of the cheongsam was drenched with moisture, making it cling softly to the body. When the fingertips touched the umbrella ribs, they swayed slightly, causing a few flecks of sunlight to fall and splash onto the wooden windows of the shophouse. The breeze carried with it the refreshing scent of the Qiannan mountain waters, blending the fragrance of osmanthus with the damp earthiness. By the halfway point of the journey, even the ends of the hair had been coated with a layer of coolness. Looking up, one could see the peaks of the mountains submerged in clouds, much like tea leaves immersed in water, where even time seemed to become gentle and soothing.

The autumn atmosphere permeates the waters of Wujiang Village, even the wind carries the moisture from the plants and trees. The stone steps are damp, and when the green cheongsam passes over them, it gently collides with the flowing water at the base of the bridge. A young woman dressed in green cheongsam holds a fan and stands on the stone steps. The fan's delicate movement causes the yellow lanterns hanging below the bridge to sway—a soft collision between the fan's motion and the flowing water. The green cheongsam-clad girl holds a fan, and as the fan's surface sways, it causes the yellow lantern shadows below the bridge to flutter—the old wooden bridge bears the autumn atmosphere of Qianbei, and even the carvings on the bridge's pillars seem to be imbued with moisture. When the wind passes, the bells at the eaves do not ring, but instead, they startle the ripples in the water, causing the cloud-like shadows to break into fragments across the entire river. Looking up, one can see how the wood color of the bridge railing, the green of the mountain peaks, and the green hue of the cheongsam blend seamlessly into the water. Time seems to slow down as if it is being entangled by the flowing water.

The autumn sunlight is gentle, spreading over the ornate eaves of the pavilions in the Wujiang Village, imbuing the wooden structures with a soft warmth. The green water meanders around the stone steps, forming a gentle curve. A young woman dressed in a green cheongsam stands by the water's edge, holding a half-open fan. The silver patterns on the fan surface reflect the ripples of the water. The red tassels dangle in the breeze, swaying gently along with the folds in her skirt—it seems as though she herself is a lotus stem emerging from this autumn water. The railing posts of the pavilions are imbued with a damp feel, and moss covers the stone paths. When the wind carries the damp scent of plants and herbs, she lifts her wrist to shield the fan from her hair, her eyes twinkling with a hint of amusement. Even the shadows of her eyelashes fall onto the water, adding another layer of the autumn's gentle charm.

The wooden structure juts out from the mountain path, resembling a piece of ink-stained scroll paper—deep-gray eaves with curved corners, with a few wisps of smoke emerging from the intricately carved wooden window frames. The newly painted wooden railing is damp with moisture, while old vines have slit their way through the gaps in the hanging-foot structure, intertwining with the pillars, creating a blend of the tranquility of an ancient stronghold and the refreshing clarity of autumn light. The floral embroidery on the boat woman's apron is infused with the fragrance of osmanthus, the sugar-fried chestnut shells in the bamboo basket are warm to the touch. An elderly woman is crouching by the shore, peeling newly harvested glutinous rice grains from the stone slab. In the alleyway, the pot of sour fish soup is bubbling, and the spicy aroma escaping through the wooden windows mingles with the autumn sunlight. Even the creaking sound of the hanging-foot structure as the wind passes through seems to be imbued with the softness of rice wine.

The riverbed of Wujiang Zha meanders gracefully, with the water flowing in a soothing rhythm that follows the contours of the mountains. The green hills on both banks create a picturesque scene, with the wooden outlines of the hanging-foot-style buildings and the elegantly curved eaves all submerged in the water. Unlike the narrow and intricate waterways found in the Jiangnan region, this area boasts a more expansive and rugged landscape. Standing on the stone steps, one can reflect deeply, marveling at the extraordinary craftsmanship of nature while appreciating the ingenious design of the Wuzhen team: without any deliberate embellishments, the scene unfolds organically in harmony with the natural characteristics of the mountains and water. This approach not only preserves the authentic essence of the natural surroundings but also conveys the poetic and gentle spirit of the Wuzhen team.

The green waters and lush mountains support the cultural heritage, protecting and preserving it while empowering innovation. The team in Wuzhen has deeply explored the integration of culture and tourism based on this philosophical approach, resulting in products that have gained popularity both domestically and internationally, particularly among the younger generation. This achievement has made Wuzhen a leading example in terms of revenue, operation, management, and positive reviews for ancient towns across the country. This success is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and genuine passion of the entire team. The team's core leader, Chairman Chen Xianghong, exemplifies this approach: he not only envisions a grand blueprint with a long-term perspective but also personally engages in refining the architectural details. For him, only a "backup of time" can truly embody the highest aspirations for Wuzhen.

The sound of the oars in Wuzhen is soft, causing the delicate reflections of water lilies beneath the stone bridges to shatter; the sound of the oars in Wujiang Zha is soothing, spreading the gentle ripples along the edges of the hanging pavilions. These boats, all part of the same lineage, carry the meticulous craftsmanship and poetic essence of Wuzhen, stirring the memories of visitors and activating the threads of time. The eaves of Wuzhen are adorned with the rain of the Jiangnan region, while the stone paths in Wujiang Zha reflect the clouds of the Qian region. Yet, both are transformed into a sense of spring within the hearts of those who hear the soothing sound of the oars. It turns out that whether it's the narrow alleys of the Jiangnan region or the secluded villages in the mountains, whether it's the gentle charm of the northern Zhejiang region or the ethereal beauty of the southern Qian region, due to the meticulous craftsmanship, the tender melodies accompanied by the sound of the oars have always been a unifying force that bridges the past and the present, transcending geographical boundaries.

Editor: Ni Jie'er, Text: Ni Jie'er, Presenter: Ni Jie'er, Chen Xue Video Production: Ni Jie'er, Photography: Qianxi, Makeup: Chen Xue, Review: Yan Zuofeng, References: "Wuzhen Zhi," Doubao, etc., Clothing: Xiuqi Brand, Filming Time and Location: Dongzha and Xizha, Putuo Town, Wuzhen, in autumn 2020, and Qiu Yi Jiang Zha, in autumn 2025.
