The class introduces students to the dance’s history, basic drumming techniques, and traditional choreography.</p><p class="ql-block">“We want to pass this on,” Xiaobo said. “It’s not just about performance — it’s about sharing a part of Chinese heritage with people here in Pittsburgh. Whether you’re Chinese or not, anyone can enjoy it.”</p><p class="ql-block">For members like John, the group has also become a source of connection and joy. “It’s exercise, art, and friendship all at once,” he said. “We practice hard, but we also laugh a lot. It feels like family.”</p><p class="ql-block">A Growing Cultural Landmark</p><p class="ql-block">What started as a small cultural experiment has evolved into one of Pittsburgh’s most dynamic community performance groups. Their bright red costumes and thunderous drums have become a familiar sight at public events, representing both cultural pride and the city’s growing diversity.</p><p class="ql-block">“The waist drum dance is about joy,” said Xiaobo. “When people see us perform, they feel that energy. That’s what keeps us going.”</p><p class="ql-block">As the rhythms of the waist drum echo across Pittsburgh, one thing is clear — this is more than just a performance trend. It’s a movement of cultural connection, community spirit, and shared celebration.</p><p class="ql-block">And in the heart of it all stands a couple — Xiaobo and Jay — whose partnership bridges continents, generations, and hearts through the simple, powerful beat of a drum.</p>
