What are you into?

Hi everyone! Imagine you're speaking to someone and you want to find out about their interests. I want you to stop saying: What do you like? Instead, we're gonna learn some expressions that native speakers use that will help you to sound much more fluent.

The first is to say: What do you like to do in your spare time or in your free time? By adding this little expression, " spare time" or " free time" your question sounds so much more fluent. So, what do you like to do in your spare time? What do you like to do in your free time?

Great! You could also ask the question: What are some of your hobbies? Remember hobbies are the activities you like to do outside of work or school, the things you like to do for fun.

Hey, speaking of fun, you could ask the question: What do you do for fun? This is a very common native speaker question.

And finally, you could even ask: What are you into these days? Here the expression " into" means what are your interests, what interests you.

Note that this one is probably the most casual of the questions. What are you into these days? You would use this when you're familiar with someone.

So now, let's talk about how to answer these questions. We don't want to just answer with "I like". No! That's too simple and too boring.

Well, one way we could answer is by using that expression "into". We could say: I'm really into…and then the name of your hobby. For example, I'm really into gardening or I'm really into baking.

Now, another native expression we could use is the expression: You could say: I'm a big reader. Here we're using the noun "reader" which describes a person who likes to read. You could say: I'm a big gardener. I'm a big baker. I'm a big hiker. I'm a big crafter. All of these are nouns that name a person who does a specific activity.

So just keep in mind that if you're using this expression you need to have a noun ready that means a person who does your activity.

Now when you say "I'm a big…", it doesn't mean that you're someone who's really great necessarily at that activity. For example, if I say " I'm a big baker", it doesn't mean that I'm showing off and saying I'm excellent at baking. It just means that I'm really passionate about it. For example, I'm a big reader. I love to read.

Lastly, we can use those keywords I mentioned earlier in the video " free time" or "spae time" in our responses. For example, we could say: In my spare time, I really enjoy hiking or in my free time, I really enjoy cooking.

Amazing! So, now you have so many different ways to ask people about their hobbies and interests and answer about your own.

Let me know in the comments below what you like to do for fun in your spare time, and remember if you enjoyed this video, don't forget to hit like and follow! See you next time!
