<p class="ql-block">那个来自弗吉尼亚名字叫<span style="font-size:18px;">Pearl</span>的女孩子真可爱，美丽纯洁人如其名。她的中文如此流利，我做梦都想能象她那样自如，虽是初见，她好像也喜欢我，对我的经历和人生设想都很感兴趣。难得的是她不但活泼聪慧，还象我一样对土地抱有热情。。。。很少见这么活泼有头脑的女孩子。我纽约出生，一路学业顺利，在康奈尔求学时参加中国研究俱乐部，对中国农业产生兴趣，通过长老会海外传教协会远涉重洋来这里帮助发展农业，在牯岭碰到她。。。。迈出的每一步看似偶然，回望这一切，无疑都是上帝的安排。</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">虽然她父母觉得不合适，我们还是结婚了。善良勇敢的姑娘随我来到安徽宿州。即便忙农业研究四处考察我们也总在一起：我骑马她坐车；我做调查她翻译。 我的才能和努力加她的协助，研究辛苦耗时但进展很顺利。我的成果得到了注意和认可，南京大学邀请我新建一个农业经济系。这比在宿州这个偏僻少资源不开明的小地方搞研究强多了，是职业发展的一大步。即便Pearl对这里有些留恋，我坚决选择了离开宿州到南京发展。 </p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">刚到南京我们就有了女儿Carol，真是事业家庭双丰收。作为首任系主任我有机会组织同事和学生们进行大规模的研究活动，这让我的结合实地调查和统计分析的研究方法如虎添翼， 不断有行业领先的研究成果。我还有很多事情要做：更系统全面的研究，教书育人培养研究者，推广应用改进中国的农业，写书。。。。</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">我在前线奋力拼搏高歌猛进，后方却接连生变。Carol竟然是智障儿童 - 我的亲生女儿，我无法接受这样的事。 不是我自私无情，Pearl把Carol留在我们身边的想法根本就不现实： 她无法得到针对智障孩子的专业教育，还会分我的心，让我无法集中精力于该做的农业研究。现在已经乱成这样了，Pearl还想再收养一个孩子。若真如此，我必将被家庭琐事和负担彻底束缚。 </p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">在我的坚持之下，Pearl终于把Carol安排在新泽西的一所知名的智障人学校。我也成了先天基因不好后天自私无情的恶人。Pearl天天诉苦埋怨，言语里满是失望和怨恨，提起那个出版商时眸子里才闪烁出久违的光芒，象初识时看我一样。我为中国农业研究倾注这么多心血，作出重大贡献， 在她眼里竟然比不上一个小小的出版商。我们曾经同心同德快乐美满的婚姻，已经名存实亡。 </p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">我的预感是对的。她选择了离开我，和出版商在一起。如此坚决，出版商离婚，我们离婚，她和出版商结婚。。。都发生在同一天。 我们在一起的人生篇章，正式画上了句号。 </p><p class="ql-block">John Lossing Buck 的前半生</p><p class="ql-block">11/27 1890: born in Dutchess County NY </p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">1892: Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker was born </p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">1914: John graduated from Cornell ( proud, prestigious), Pearl grated from Randolph-Macon Woman's collage ( 第二幕开始）</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">1915: went to China as agricultural missionary, met Pearl （第二幕第二场 初识 第一次对话，爱慕）</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">1917 married to Pearl Sydenstricker, moved to suzhou (宿州）, Anhui （ 第二幕第三场，新婚，初到宿州，第二次对话/简短，甜蜜）</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">1918: moved to Zhejiang, began research about Chinese Farm economy using sociological tools based on statistical surveys conducted in person.
