I can’t keep up with you!” Runye finally lifted her face and said with a smile.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">Shao’an had to ease his long strides.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">“I’m used to running up and down the gullies in the hills. He saw these kinds of wildflowers every day up in the hills—nothing special.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">Runye had already run ahead and sat down beside the flowers, waiting for him.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">When he got there, she said, “Let’s sit here for a bit.”</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">He sat down next to her, folding his arms, staring at the muddy-yellow Yuanxi River flowing quietly into the distance.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">Runye picked one of the flowers and fiddled with it for a while before finally speaking, hesitating,</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">“Shao’an, I got something important to tell you… I want to see what you think I should do.”</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">Shao’an turned to look at her, wondering what trouble she’d run into.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">He knew this had to be the thing she mentioned when she sent word for him to come into town.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">Her face was as red as if she’d caught a fever. After a moment, she said,</p><p class="ql-block">“…My stepmother’s family found me a match.”</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">“A… match?” For a moment, Shao’an didn’t get it.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">“It’s… the son of a county leader,” Runye said, still looking down, cheeks flushed, playing with the flower.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">“Oh…” Now Shao’an understood. First thought that flashed in his head: She’s getting married.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">Runye’s getting married? he asked himself in surprise.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">Yeah, she’s getting married, he told himself.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">A strange feeling came over him. He put his sweaty hands on his patched knees, and without thinking, rubbed them a bit, almost like he was feeling sorry for himself.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">What’s wrong with you? he thought. Come on, get a grip.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">He quickly pulled himself together. He should be acting like a big brother, helping her figure things out. She’d asked him here because she trusted him.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">So he forced himself to speak calmly,</p><p class="ql-block">“Well… that’s a good thing. Their family’s well-off… What’s the guy do for work?”</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">“I don’t want to,” Runye suddenly looked up, eyes full of surprise and disappointment.</p><p class="ql-block"><br></p><p class="ql-block">“You don’t want to?” Shao’an was stumped.
