K3 Lesson Plan: Dance, Books & Letter Y (90 Minutes)

Objective: Students will engage in physical activity, review vocabulary from a familiar book, learn new vocabulary from a new story, and reinforce recognition and sound of the letter 'Y'.

Materials:

* Music player for "Dance Freeze Party" and "Hokey Pokey"

* Book: "The Supermarket"

* Book: "Rain on Fairyland"

* Television/Screen for displaying words

* Worksheet:

* Section A: Pictures (🍠, 🪀, 🧶, 🐜, 🛋️) for circling 'Y' sound

* Section B: Tracing lines for "yes," "yawn," "yell"

* Section C: Space for drawing 'Y' words

* Pencils, crayons

Lesson Breakdown:

1. Welcome & Warm-up (5 minutes)

* Greet students warmly.

2. Sing and Dance Party! (15 minutes)

* "Dance Freeze Party": Play the song and encourage students to dance freely. When the music stops, they must freeze in place.

* "Hokey Pokey": Lead students in singing and performing the actions for "Hokey Pokey."

3. Book Review: "The Supermarket" (15 minutes)

* Introduction: "Yesterday, we read a book about a place where we buy food! Who remembers the name of the book?" (Allow responses: "The Supermarket").

* Review: Hold up the book. "Let's remember some of the things we saw in the supermarket!"

* Sentence Practice: Read aloud and have students repeat the following sentences, pointing to pictures in the book if available, or using gestures:

* "The carts."

* "The fruits."

* "The vegetables."

* "The bread."

* "The meat."

* "The eggs."

* "The check out."

* Discussion: Ask simple questions like, "What's your favorite fruit to buy at the supermarket?"

4. New Book: "Rain on Fairyland" (15 minutes)

* Introduction: "Today, we have a brand new story! It's called 'Rain on Fairyland.' What do you think this book might be about?"

* Reading: Read the book aloud with .

* Sentence Practice: As you read or after reading, highlight and have students repeat the following sentences, pointing to corresponding illustrations:

* "Rain on fairies."

* "Rain on rocks."

* "Rain on flowers."

* "Rain on animals."

* "Rain on water."

* "Rain on bugs."

* "Rain on leaves."

* "Rain on roof."

* Discussion: "What was your favorite part of the story?" "What happens when it rains?"

5. Letter 'Y' (20 minutes)

* Introduction: "Yesterday, we started learning about a special letter. Does anyone remember what letter it was?" (Guide them to 'Y').

* Sound Review: "That's right, the letter 'Y'! And what sound does 'Y' make? /y/ /y/ /y/ like in 'yes'!" (Practice the sound together).

* TV Display & Word Recognition:

* "Look at the television! What word do you see?" (Encourage students to call out the word).

* Go through the following words, displaying each one:

* yarn

* yard

* yam

* yak

* yacht

* yo-yo

* yellow

* yell

* yawn

* yes

* Reinforcement: Briefly review the words and their sounds.

6. Letter 'Y' Worksheet Activity (15 minutes)

* Instructions: Distribute the worksheets and pencils/crayons.

* Part A: Circle the pictures with 'Y' sound: "Look at the pictures. Circle the pictures that start with the /y/ sound, like 'yo-yo'!"

* Pictures: 🍠 (yam), 🪀 (yo-yo), 🧶 (yarn), 🐜 (ant - no 'Y'), 🛋️ (couch - no 'Y').

* Part B: Trace and write the words: "Now, let's practice writing! Trace the words 'yes,' 'yawn,' and 'yell,' then try to write them on your own."

* Part C: Draw the words that have letter 'Y': "Finally, draw a picture of one or more of the 'Y' words we learned today! You could draw a yo-yo, or someone yawning!"

* Independent Work: Circulate to assist students as they work.

7. Wrap-up & Review (5 minutes)

* "Great job today, everyone! We danced, read stories, and learned so much about the letter 'Y'!"

* Quickly review a few 'Y' words or the sound.

* Praise students for their participation and effort.
