K3 Dance Lesson Plan: Let's Go to the Zoo!

Subject: Dance, Literacy, Phonics

Grade Level: K3

Theme: Animals, Big/Small, Winter

Objectives:

* Students will review vocabulary related to "big" objects.

* Students will identify and read winter-themed vocabulary.

* Students will practice identifying and sounding out letters and simple words.

* Students will engage in creative movement inspired by zoo animals.

Part 1: Warm-up & Book Review (8-10 minutes)

1. Welcome & Movement Warm-up (2 minutes):

* Start with simple stretches and movements to get bodies ready (e.g., reach for the sky, touch toes, gentle shakes).

* "Let's get our bodies ready for some animal adventures!"

2. Review: "Big" Book (20 minutes):

* Hold up the book "Big" (or a visual aid representing the concept of "big").

* Read aloud and review sentences, emphasizing the word "big":

* "A big house" (Encourage students to make a big shape with their arms)

* "A big bus" (Pretend to drive a big bus)

* "A big car" (Pretend to steer a big car)

* "A big dinosaur" (Stomp like a big dinosaur)

* "A big plane" (Spread arms wide like a big plane flying)

* "A big tree" (Stand tall and reach arms up like a big tree)

* Discussion: "What other big things can you think of?"

Part 2: Story Time & Winter Words (20 minutes)

1. Read Aloud: "Winter" Book (8 minutes):

* Introduce the book "Winter."

* Read aloud and review sentences, focusing on the vocabulary:

* "The snow" (Wiggle fingers like falling snow)

* "The sled" (Pretend to sit on a sled and slide)

* "The snowman" (Pretend to build a snowman, stacking balls)

* "The coat" (Pretend to put on a warm coat)

* "The mittens" (Wiggle fingers like putting on mittens)

* "The skates" (Pretend to glide on ice skates)

* Discussion: "What do you like to do in winter?"

Part 3: Phonics Fun (30 minutes)

1. White Board Activity:

* Write on the whiteboard:

* w + a = wa

* Introduce and sound out the letters/words together as a class.

* Individual Oral Reading: Ask students to read these words orally and individually. Provide support and encouragement.

Part 4: "Let's Go to the Zoo!" Dance (

1. Introduction

* "Now that our bodies are warm and our brains are ready, let's go on an imaginary trip to the zoo! What animals do you think we'll see?"

2. Animal Movement Exploration (

* Lion: "Let's be big, strong lions! How do lions walk? (Slow, powerful strides). How do they roar? (Big, loud roar)." (Encourage big, slow movements, then a loud "ROAR!")

* Monkey: "Now, let's be playful monkeys! How do monkeys move? (Swing arms, jump, scratch). Can you make a monkey sound?" (Encourage quick, agile movements, jumping, and monkey sounds).

* Elephant: "Look, a giant elephant! How do elephants walk? (Heavy, slow steps). What about their trunks?" (Encourage heavy stomping, swinging arms like a trunk).

* Snake: "Slippery snakes! How do snakes move? (Wiggle on the floor, slither)." (Encourage wiggling movements on the spot or slithering).

* Giraffe: "Tall giraffes! How do they walk? (Long, graceful steps). Can you reach up high like a giraffe eating leaves?" (Encourage tall, graceful movements, reaching arms up).

* Penguin: "Wobbly penguins! How do they walk?" (Waddle, small steps, arms tucked in). (Encourage waddling movements).

* Free Dance: Play some upbeat, animal-themed music and let students move like their favorite zoo animals.

Part 5: Cool-down & Wrap-up

1. Cool-down (minutes):

* "Time to calm our animal bodies. Let's lie down quietly like sleeping animals." (Play soft, calming music).

* Encourage slow, deep breaths.

* Gentle stretches (e.g., cat-cow stretch, child's pose).

2. Review & Goodbye (minutes):

* "What was your favorite animal to be today?"

* "Great job dancing and learning today, K3! See you next time!"
