Many of us feel compelled to say yes to things that make us miserable. Yes to work that is not our job. Yes to taking on jobs when we're at home or on vacation. Yes to boring, unnecessary meetings or company dinners.

我们很多人总觉得自己“不得不”答应那些让人难受的要求——答应去做本不属于自己的工作；答应在家中或度假时继续加班；答应参加那些无聊又多余的会议和公司聚餐。

We believe that saying yes means we're a team player, a good friend, a successful professional. Refusing seems like it isn't an option and will bring terrible consequences.

我们总以为，说“好”代表我们是一个有团队精神的人，是值得信赖的朋友，是事业有成的职场人。拒绝，仿佛从来不是一个选项，一旦说“不”，就会带来可怕的后果。 Why is a simple no so hard for us to say? We think "no" can damage the good relationship with the asker, and that the asker won't be willing to do something we ask for down the road. But, in fact, the opposite is true: People would much rather have you say no upfront than say yes and then drop the ball later.

为什么一个简单的“不”字却让我们难以启齿？我们担心拒绝会破坏彼此的良好关系，怕以后对方也不愿意帮我们的忙。但事实上，情况恰恰相反——人们更希望你一开始就明确拒绝，而不是答应好了，最后却掉链子。

There is a strategy for saying no that will help you judge requests much more quickly, and reply much more effectively.

其实，说“不”是有策略的。这些方法可以帮你更快衡量请求的轻重，也能让你更有效地做出回应。 First, do some self-examination: Figure out your principles and set rules for sticking to them. Instead of just saying no, you make it clear that the answer comes from the core of your values, beliefs, priorities and preferences, instead of your mood or schedule at the moment.

首先，进行一些自我审视。厘清自己的原则，并设立清晰的守则来坚持它们。这样一来，你的拒绝就不是随口一说，而是让人明白，它源自你内在的价值观、信念、优先顺序和个人偏好，而非一时情绪或当前日程。

Then, when you do refuse, frame your response with empowered language. For instance, use "I don't," not "I can't," which signals that your "no" stems from who you are and the rules you have set for yourself.

接着，当你开口拒绝时，在表达上使用一些能体现你主体性的措辞。比方说，用“我不做这个”（I don’t），而不是“我不能做这个”（I can’t）——这让对方明白，你的拒绝源于对自己身份的认同，以及你对个人原则的坚持。 If you do find yourself stuck for an answer in the moment, don't respond quickly. Always buy time to evaluate the request. Be prepared with handy phrases: "I will have to get back to you. Let me look at my calendar." Like anything worth doing, learning to say no effectively, requires patience, practice and persistence. Say yes to that challenge.
