As the sun begins its descent, the waters of Zishui shimmer at the small estuary of Taojiang, casting a shimmering glow of golden and orange hues across the sky. The clouds are painted with a warm, inviting palette. In the distance, the outlines of the mountains stand out clearly, bathed in the tranquil glow of the setting sun. I stand by the riverbank, my gaze lingering on the interplay of trees and structures, feeling the warmth and serenity emanating from this place. In this moment, time seems to slow down, immersing one in the embrace of nature.

In Taojiang Xiaohekou, I encountered an elderly man who was fishing. He sat quietly by the riverbank, his expression intensely focused, as if completely absorbed in his own world. We struck up a conversation, and I learned that he had lived in this area for over three decades. With a warm and gentle tone, he recounted how Xiaohekou used to be a crucial junction for both land and water transportation in the region, with a port, a wharve, a bus station, and the oId county government all located here. In those days, the area was bustling with activity, teeming with life and commerce. Today, two railway bridges and two highway bridges span the Zijiang River, and the river has been the subject of a series of hydropower projects, resulting in the construction of over a dozen power stations. After the construction of dams and reservoirs, the shipping industry in the area has gradually declined. Despite these changes, the sunset over Xiaohekou remains as beautiful as ever. The old man's words made me even more appreciative of the moment I was experiencing and gave me a deeper understanding of the history and transformation of this land.
