This traditional paving method was later named "Mosaic gravel road". It offers enviable views over this old part of Lisbon. The slope of the hill was quite steep, and there were young people and children climbing up. The oldest fortifications on the site dated from the 2nd century BC. The hill on São Jorge Castle stands has played an important part in the history of Lisbon, having served as the location of fortifications occupied successively by Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, and Moors, before it was conquested by the Portuguese in the 1147 Siege of Lisbon. The site now is a national monument and museum. 参观完城堡出来已经是傍晚6点了， 一天走下来都很累了。下山到市中心起码还要走20分钟。正好有一辆巴士为过马路的行人停下来，恳兄挥手向司机示意希望上车，司机很友善，居然开门让我们上车。巴士去哪里不重要，重要的是巴士向山下行，省了我们自己走下去。到了市区后我们在其中一个站下车。 After visiting the castle, it was already 6 p.m. in the evening. We were exhausted from walking all day, and it would take at least another 20 minutes to hike down to the city centre. Just then, a bus stopped for pedestrians crossing the road. Brother Ken waved at the driver, hoping to board—and to our surprise, the kind driver actually opened the door and let us on. It didn't matter where the bus was headed; the important thing was that it was going downhill, saving us the trouble of walking.
