Away and raging,

I’d rather sail away

like a swan or eagle—

here and gone.

The saddest sound is going inland,

getting tied up to the dirt.

It’s really going.

The forest and mountain

are preferred to a street,

if I could—

if I only could,

I surely would.

When the nerve denies you,

the only way to go

is to go above it.

A trail is zigzag,

but it never loses its beauty,

leading every footstep.

If a chance allowed me to go through every curve of it,

I would surely.

Don’t ask how long it will last,

or how tough it will be—

just go, and keep going.

from Hood Peak to Napa Grove,

the whole 395, all the way up,

feeling the wild quiet.
