The HK100 ultramarathon is a tough 100 km race, and even though I wasn’t running, my scout troop volunteered to help out at checkpoint six. As new scouts, we were really excited about this chance to be part of the event!

At first, we were full of energy, setting up our tents and food stands. Then, a few runners started to come. When we had some extra time, we cheered for the runners, shouting, “Checkpoint 6, 70 kilometers, just 8 more kilometers until the next checkpoint!” It felt like we were one big family working together.

But around 9 pm, things took a turn for the worse. The temperature dropped to frost levels, and the runners started coming in almost n. We ran around trying to help them with whatever they needed and offered encouragement. The ground became slippery from spilled water and soon turned to ice, making the checkpoint feel like an ice rink!

By midnight, we were all tired and fighting to stay awake as we helped more exhausted runners. Finally, after five more long hours, the last runner left, and we could return to our tents for some rest. It was so cold that we huddled together to keep warm! After about three hours of sleep, we woke up to a beautiful sunrise, and the temperature finally started to rise again. After cleaning up, we took a bus home, and by the end of the day, we were so tired that we collapsed into our own beds.
