Dr. Ron Rhodes: THE PSALMIST’S WORDS TO GOD IN THE MIDST OF ADVERSITY

In life’s darkest valleys, the psalmists never hesitated to cry out to God with raw honesty and desperate hope. Their prayers weren’t polished or restrained — they were urgent, unfiltered, and full of trust in God’s character even amid confusion, fear, and suffering.

The verses that follow capture a chorus of human anguish poured out to a listening, loving God — pleas for rescue, mercy, protection, and restoration. As you read these cries from the depths, may you be reminded that our God invites us to bring our burdens boldly to His throne.

Arise and rescue me—Psalm 3:7; 17:13; 40:13; 71:4; 119:134; 120:2.

Be merciful—Psalm 25:16.

Do not abandon me—Psalm 71:9.

Do not ignore my cry for help—Psalm 35:17,22; 55:1; 83:1; 109:1.

Do not punish me anymore—Psalm 39:10.

How long will you forget me?—Psalm 13:1.

I come to you for protection—Psalm 7:1.

Let your unfailing love comfort me—Psalm 119:76.

Make your face shine down on us—Psalm 80:3.

If you are facing adversity, here is a prayer that may help you, based on the verses I shared above:

Lord God,

In the midst of trouble, I lift my eyes to You. Arise and rescue me. Do not turn away or ignore my cry for help. Be merciful to me, for I am weary and in need of Your grace. Do not abandon me in my weakness, and please, do not let Your discipline crush my spirit.

How long, O Lord, will You seem distant? I come to You for protection — be my refuge and my strong tower. Let Your unfailing love be my comfort, and shine Your face upon me once more.

Hurry, Lord — come quickly to help me. Shield me from the schemes of unethical people. Rise to my defense and plead my cause. Restore my life again; breathe into me the strength only You can give. Surround me with Your tender mercies.

Save me from those who are against me. You alone are my hope. In every trial, I will call on You, and I will trust You to answer — not because I deserve it, but because You are good, gracious, and merciful.
