Poetics Multilingual Mag

Upon Hearing of My Friend Pete Taylor’s Move to the Isle of Lewis by Ma Yongbo

Middle-aged, with family in tow—why move
to such a small island? The British Empire itself
is already tiny enough. Do you plan, like Yeats,
to plant beans, keep bees, watch the sea’s glimmer at noon,
listen to the tide dragging her skirts at dusk?
Perhaps the headaches poetry brings will lessen here,
or vanish. Your lovely daughters might breathe
the peat’s sliced freshness, tinged with brine.
Stone circles and blackhouse villages guard mysteries
like Gaelic itself—once, a Gaelic title in Heaney’s verse
nearly killed me, with no dictionary, maybe you’ll learn
the tongue for us. Tell me soon, too: is gannet good to eat?
Though I know the mainland’s just a larger island,
we stand on our own isles, casting shimmering spider silks,
trying to weave a net to catch—something.
But Stornaway, the lone town, and ten thousand sparse islanders
makes me fear your loneliness will crack like a flame through walls.
April 10, 2025

water / stones on the Isle of Lewis by Pete Taylor

this beach will be our bookstore
where the rocks each tell a story
where a turquoise sea unfolds

across a ream of skeletal remains
of time-ground shells on shorelines
perfect bound with leaves of gold

out here we need fear loneliness
no more than fish fear rain
or book-lovers fear libraries

out here our best and oldest
friends will be the standing stones
the west wind and the chessmen

Note: Lewis is famous for an archeological find of 12th century ivory Viking chess pieces - now in the British Museum in London, but with a few in the Castle Museum in Stornoway.

English poet Pete Taylor has lived and worked in Europe, America, the Middle East and Africa – enjoying a long career as an advertising copywriter.
