This interview is a tremendous honor for me. Personally, I work in tourism and photography services in the Banff National Park area of Canada and run my own travel company. I am a father of three, and much of my free time is occupied by my children. In terms of hobbies, landscape photography is now my top passion, including post-processing and creating content for social media. I also enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and skiing.

When and how did you start your photographic journey?

I started learning photography in 2015. At that time I only have two sons and I wanted to capture some precious memories for them. On one occasion, I met a photographer from China at a gathering. He took a few photos of my children, and when he sent them to me later, I suddenly realized—wow, photos can speak! He captured the warmth and interaction between the two boys, which sparked a strong interest in photography for me. After my daughter was born, I did manage to take some wonderful childhood photos for them. Because of my work in the tourism industry, I frequently visited the beautiful Banff National Park in the Rocky Mountains. I began to explore landscape photography gradually, develpped a strong insterst in it and became deeply engrossed in it.

For many of us photography is either a hobby or a way of life. I lead fellow photography enthusiasts to beautiful places around the world to shoot, and I make a living from it. I feel like I currently have three different jobs: 1. A photographer--capturing and creating exceptional landscape photography 2. Business man - running my tourism company, and 3. Father - accompanying my children as they group up and educating them. As a landscape photographer, I need to engage in outdoor activities, venturing into those magnificent natural landscapes to capture breathtaking scenery and witness extraordinary views that most people never get to see. One the other hand as a father, I hope I have enough time to stay with my kids and witness their growth. I constantly look for a balance among work and family and feel very fulfilled in my life.

And of course photograph is a hobby for me because when I’m feeling down, need to push myself to think, or even face a creative block in photography, I take my camera with a long lens and shoot small scenes around my home or in nearby parks. In the same year, I began to seriously and systematically study photo editing and started traveling to some of the world's most beautiful and extreme photography destinations to create. By 2022, I was no longer satisfied with shooting only in the Canadian Rockies. In February of that year, I had my first opportunity to join a photography group to Iceland, where I captured and discovered many stunning landscapes, including Iceland's blue ice caves and the snow-covered Vestrahorn Mountain. It was then that I realized how many extraordinary landscapes exist in the world. From that point on, I gradually began traveling globally for creative work and leading photography tours, including two trips to Iceland each year, winter trips to Norway's Lofoten Islands, autumn and spring trips to Italy's Dolomites, and April journeys to the breathtaking autumn landscapes of Patagonia in South America.

You have your very own style. I grew up in the mountains, so I have a deep affection for mountains and rivers. The creation of landscape photography is an interactive expression of the various elements of nature. In ancient Chinese paintings, mountains and rivers were always depicted on a grand scale, while the people and villages in the scenes appeared extremely small, showing that the ancients held a deep reverence for nature. Frost, rain, snow, auroras, and lightning are all forms of nature's dialogue with humanity, its language. To capture great landscape photos, one must accurately interpret and thoroughly understand the messages nature conveys to us, while respecting all natural laws in the process of shooting.

What is more important to you, the mood,/story behind your images or the technical perfection?

For me, mood and story behind the photo are more important. All technical aspects of photography serve to express the atmosphere and narrative of the image. A photograph is a momentary record, capturing a decisive and remarkable instant. Therefore, what matters most is the feeling the image evokes in the viewer. Of course, in landscape photography combined with post-processing, the quality of modern cameras has reached a point where there isn’t a significant difference between settings like F8-F13 and ISO 320-1000.

What generally is your relationship to your subject matter beyond being an observer?

Do you prepare carefully the locations where you are intending to photograph?

In landscape photography, the main elements to capture include mountains, water, plants, and so on. Water exists in various forms: ice, frost, rain, snow, glaciers, rivers, oceans, lakes, and more. In Chinese culture, there is a famous saying: "Water benefits all things but does not compete," meaning that water nourishes all living beings in nature without striving to assert its uniqueness. This embodies a spirit of humility and inclusiveness. Mountains, on the other hand, possess many characteristics, such as the solitude of being high and cold, the broad-mindedness of their vastness, and the resilience of their sharp edges. Plants and trees represent the vitality of summer and the warm colors of autumn, among other things. I strive to capture these unique qualities of natural elements through my camera—the softness of water, the grandeur of mountains, the brilliance of autumn, and the harshness of winter. These are the emotions I express in my images and the dialogue I have with nature.

When I go to a shooting location, I carefully plan the trip: study the positions of the shooting spots and mountains, the areas where sunrise and sunset light will fall, and even the distance from accommodations to the shooting points. These are all part of the meticulous planning process. Sometimes I still cannot complete the planned shooting no matter how meticulously I prepare, due to uncontrolled factors like weather. I believe everything is the best arrangement. The unexpected changes could surprise the journey, as long as the photographer can quickly make the decision. For example, capturing a stunning moment on the way to the shooting spot when storm suddenly arrives.

Describe your overall photographic vision.

Photography is always a process of capturing moments, and landscape photography is no exception. Each of our landscape photographers is striving to capture that perfect image we envision. To achieve this, I explore places I’ve never been to before, such as newly formed blue ice caves beneath glaciers. Sometimes, I revisit the same scene repeatedly, waiting for those awe-inspiring moments—whether it’s lightning, the aurora, a stunning cloud formation, or even a sudden appearance of an animal. These elements can add a completely different feel to the same scene. Recently, many experts have commented on the homogenization of photography, arguing against shooting in the same locations. I don’t entirely agree with this perspective because every interaction I have with nature is unique. When that once-in-a-lifetime moment occurs, I want to be the one who personally experiences and captures it, rather than relying on post-processing or AI to recreate it. After all, the most beautiful moments in landscape photography come from firsthand experiences—something that can’t be achieved by simply sitting behind a keyboard.

What are the main features of a successful landscape photographer in your opinion?

As a professional landscape photographer, I believe one must have a thorough understanding of natural elements like wind, frost, rain, and snow, as well as the ability to predict weather conditions using various forecasting tools. Only then can they gain a clear idea of the scenes they might capture. As the saying goes, a photographer needs to "read the language of nature." All natural phenomena—wind, frost, rain, snow, and weather changes—are essentially nature's way of communicating with humans. A landscape photographer must understand and interpret these changes to make their shooting plans relatively successful or to have a reasonably accurate prediction in advance. For example, in the winter at Banff National Park, you need to know what scenes might appear at certain shooting spots when temperatures drop below -20°C, such as ice formations, snowdrifts, frost-covered trees, and other extreme landscapes caused by the severe cold.

When capturing the aurora, we first need to predict its arrival time and intensity, check the clarity of the sky, the thickness of the clouds, and other factors to increase the chances of a successful shoot, while also considering the foreground. Another crucial point is that a landscape photographer must have sufficient physical stamina to handle activities like hiking and mountaineering. This is because we aim to capture scenes that others haven’t seen, revealing the lesser-known aspects of nature to the world.

Could you please tell us something more about your workflow from the idea to the final product?

Many years ago, I used to enjoy collecting art. In today’s society, there are many counterfeit artworks, and without sufficient knowledge to identify them, my approach was to frequently view and appreciate genuine, high-quality art to enhance my artistic sensibility and ability to discern authenticity. The same applies to photographic art. I often visit top photography websites, especially 1x.com, to enjoy and learn from works of great artistic value, thereby improve my understanding of arts and inspiration. Therefore, having a vision in mind is the most important thing, followed by taking action and visiting beautiful locations during the right seasons to create. Of course, many of the scenes I capture may not seem particularly valuable at the time, but when I revisit the raw file during my leisure and scrutinize them, I often find more inspiration for post-processing. Modern landscape photography is inseparable from post-processing, so having solid post-processing skills is also crucial for producing a great landscape photograph.

Where do you look to find inspiration and what inspires you the most?

I believe all inspiration comes from imagination, much like writing. The depth of one’s experiences often matters more than advanced writing skills. You need enough imagination in your mind to craft a complete piece of writing. It is the same as photography. Having that beautiful image in your mind is more important, as it drives you to seek out where it comes from and capture it. On Instagram, I follow many photographers with diverse styles, and I frequently browse the works featured on the homepage of 1x, almost daily. Whether it’s documentary, landscape, or portrait photography, these works provide me with a lot of inspiration. Learning from others’ experiences and gaining inspiration is often easier than racking your own brain. For example, incorporating human elements into nature or blending portraits with natural landscapes can add a striking touch to the image. Therefore, photography is also a reflection of one’s personal experiences. The more you have in your mind, the more naturally it translates into the reality captured in your photos. Nature offers many different weather conditions, and even the same location can yield vastly different results when shot at different times, seasons, or temperatures. So, for places I’m very familiar with, like Banff, I revisit them in different seasons, and I often find new inspiration and perspectives to explore.

Many people think that the gear is not very important when the passion for photography is strong. The wide-angle lens allows me to include more elements in the frame, and its distortion effect can make the foreground even more captivating. I also use Kase Filter to help my shot. Meanwhile, during my shoots in Europe, I often fly my DJI Mavic 3 Pro, which gives me a bird's-eye view to capture these spectacular scenes. In April 2024, I visited this beautiful place for the first time. We stayed at a campsite at the base of the mountain for two nights and, under a starry night, hiked for two and half hours to reach this spot. Not like many other photographers descended to the lakeside to shoot, I wanted to find the best position to center the peak in the frame and capture as much of the mountain's reflection as possible. After searching in the dark for a long time, I finally climbed onto a large rock and captured this shot of Fitz Roy Peak during the blue hour, with the mountain glowing softly. Photographers often say Patagonia has two golden sunrises—the first one is this stunning blue-hour glow on the peaks.

Who are your favourite photographers or mentors whose works have influenced you and your photography?

As mentioned earlier, when I first started using a camera in 2015, a photographer took a few photos of my children that left a lasting impression on me. Starting last year, I also created a public photography group where I offer free series of photography courses for beginners, hoping to pass on this spirit of public service. At the end of 2019, I began purchasing post-processing courses, such as those by Weimin Chu(Thomas Chu on 1x), who won the 2019 National Geographic Global Photographer of the Year award and received accolades at the World Press Photo contest. Of course, I also follow other outstanding landscape photographers like Daniel Kordan, Marc Adamus, and our local Banff-based photographer Paul Zizka.
