The Light of the Lighthouse in Dental Micro-sculpture

In February 2025, at Han Peng's Micro-sculpture Art Studio in Xi'an, the routine was broken by an email from abroad. Inside the envelope was a badly damaged tooth. Upon closer inspection, traces of being smoked and burned were all over it, and there was also a shocking large cavity, as if silently telling the vicissitudes of life of its owner.

The letter that came with the tooth revealed a magnificent life story. The letter was written by a sailor who had been drifting on the vast sea for decades, leaving his footprints in various ports and docks around the world. During that long nautical career, turbulent waves were as common as daily meals, and life-and-death tests had become a part of his life. Once, in order to secure the ship amidst strong winds and huge waves, he was severely whipped in the face by a broken steel cable, leaving a deep scar ever since. However, no matter how many hardships and obstacles he had experienced, whenever he returned to his hometown, what he most eagerly anticipated to see was the lighthouse standing firmly on the shore. Because the light of that lighthouse was like the call of home. As long as he saw it, there was hope in his heart, and his tired soul found a place to belong.

As Han Peng read the letter, looking at the tooth that had weathered the years, the resolute face of the sailor with the scar, and the warm lighthouse in the photo kept interweaving and emerging in his mind. An uncontrollable creative passion burned brightly in his heart. He couldn't wait to pick up his pen and tools and immerse himself in the design and production process.

Han Peng examined the tooth carefully and had a sudden inspiration. He turned it upside down, and after some meticulous polishing, the tooth became a reef that had been eroded by wind and rain. He carefully ground away the decayed root of the tooth and turned it into a platform. Then, following the appearance of the lighthouse in the photo, he built a miniature lighthouse on the platform. The old sailor mentioned in the letter that the earliest lighthouse had no enclosure, and later, for the safety of the lighthouse keeper, the villagers built an enclosure. No matter how violently the wind and rain raged or how muddy and slippery the road was, the lighthouse keeper would always light the lamp on the lighthouse on time to guide the ships on their long voyages. Han Peng incorporated these details one by one into his creation, making this lighthouse in dental micro-sculpture more full of stories and vitality.

Han Peng thought that this was not just a lighthouse, but also a portrayal of the sailor's entire life. Therefore, with delicate carving techniques, he vaguely carved the sailor's scarred face onto the reef. After removing the tartar in the cavity, a natural "karst cave" appeared. He had another sudden inspiration and filled it with lake blue oil paint. In an instant, this "karst cave" seemed to turn into a profound underwater world. Han Peng thought again, how could there be no boat in the karst cave? He immediately wrote to the captain, asking him to send a white hair. After receiving the hair, Han Peng used it to make a small oar, hoping that the retired captain could still find the feeling of riding the wind and waves on the sea.

After completing this dental micro-sculpture work full of painstaking efforts, Han Peng carefully sent it to the old sailor by insured mail. Soon, the captain's reply arrived. In the letter, the old sailor couldn't hide his excitement and joy. He said that he was extremely happy and satisfied. This was not just a work of art, but also a memory and witness of his entire life. He decided to pass this precious item on to his descendants, so that they could know about his stories when he was young. Although science is now highly developed and satellite navigation has become the main tool for navigation, this lighthouse has long become an eternal lamp of hope in his heart, always shining with a warm light, illuminating every journey of his life.

Three-dimensional Ivory Micro-sculpture: The Spirit of Heaven and Earth

Probably when I was still in primary school, I had an obsessive fascination with human anatomy, especially with human skulls. Every day after school, I would secretly run to the anatomy teaching and research office in the medical school's teaching building to look at the specimens of corpses. Once, I didn't know who put a skull specimen outside the windowsill, and it was actually carried back to school in a schoolbag by a naughty primary school student. After school, a group of bold boys gathered together to study this skull and expressed their grand opinions with their meager knowledge.

Decades later, my passion remained the same. Finally, the opportunity came. I borrowed two skulls from the hospital, one male and one female. I planned to reduce their size proportionally to be as small as the size of my little finger. I had to first draw the design blueprint, mark the dimensions of each part, and then arrange the craftsmanship. I really put to use all the skills of mechanical drawing that I learned at school. I selected a very fine piece of ivory material, which was given to me by a friend decades ago. So, I could only succeed and not fail.

I started the domestically-made "Daliwang" grinding machine that I had just purchased. It was a machine that could rotate at 90,000 revolutions per minute, running smoothly at a high speed and making a sound like the chirping of insects! It made me unable to hold back my creative passion! I worked day and night. As time passed, this small piece of ivory material, after being carved and chiseled countless times in my hands, finally took on the shape as expected in the design blueprint. The sutures between the six major parts of the skull were as fine as a hair, scattered in an orderly manner, and extremely lifelike.

There were two neat rows of teeth on the frontal bone, a total of 32 teeth, each of which could be counted clearly! Then, by seeping the color of the skull into the gaps between the teeth, one could almost smell the odor of bad breath. In the two deep eye sockets of the vestibule, two extremely small micro-holes were inlaid, which should be the channels of the optic nerves. Finally, after polishing with a felt ball, the skull actually emitted a strange gleam! A base was made of a 5-millimeter piece of pigment, and in the most prominent position, there were small seal characters engraved, which read, "Heaven and Earth are the parents of all things, and humans are the spirit of all things."

The last and most difficult process was to completely hollow out this skull. Since I couldn't see the movement of the tool bit, I had to rely on the vibration of the tool bit and the tool to judge the thickness of the skull. If there was the slightest mistake, the skull would be ground through, and all my previous efforts would be in vain.

When all the lights in the workshop were turned off and the miniature switch was pressed, the LED lights inside the skull would shine with an eerie light, shooting out from the eye sockets, making people shudder.

During the process of creating this work, I gained a new understanding of human beings. I also visited the Banpo Museum and consulted a large number of relevant materials and documents. Why are there thousands of species of animals on the earth, yet only humans can rule the world and dominate the earth, constantly creating new driving forces for social development? From the invention of the steam engine in the First Industrial Revolution to the rapid development of computers, the Internet, and AI today, all these are attributed to the human brain. And now, human research on the brain is still in its infancy. I am eagerly looking forward to continuous human discoveries that will make greater contributions to human development.

Han's Micro-sculpture Art Studio

February 2025, Ancient City Xi'an
