Towards the end of 2024, people are immersed in the festive atmosphere. Cal Performance welcomes an important world-famous opera artist, Soprano Asmik Grigorian from Lithuania in Hertz Hall today.

In the morning, it was still cloudy and rainy. In the afternoon, the sun suddenly stopped blowing. The campus smeared by the golden sun suddenly became warm. It opened its warm arms to welcome the debut artist. The good weather makes people in a good mood.

I am familiar with the name of soprano artist Asmik Grigorian. This year, she shines as Cio-Cio San in the Puccini opera "Mrs. Butterfly" in the Met Opera.

She’s an Italianate lyric soprano with some spinto qualities. She is not Wagnerian, not even a Jugendlisch.

Grigorian's performance conveys an extremely real emotional level to the world through the big screen. From Cio-Cio-San's naive fantasy of her lover to despair, Grigorian delicately interpreted the transformation of the character, fully demonstrating her grasp of the psychological depth of the character and the handling of dramatic tension. I was moved to tears with her wholehearted performance and delicate and touching voice. In recent years, I have seen countless different versions of Madam Butterfly. What touched me most was the version of Asmik Grigorian. Asmik Grigorian brought us a set of Tchaikovsky's art songs and Sergei Rachmaninoff's famous art songs in the second half.

The first song Amid the din of the ball is a poem by the famous 19th-century Russian poet and playwright Aleksei Tolstoy (this Tolstoy is not another Tolstoy the big master) "In the Hustle of the Ball" Op. 38, No. 3, is an amazing song. The artistic song, composed by Tchaikovsky in 1878, is part of the Six Romantic Songs, Op. 38.

With Alexey Tolstoy's romantic and sentimental poems as the lyrics, it has become a perfect combination of music and poetry. Grigorian's interpretation seems to put people in a ballroom in the 19th century. Her singing is both tender and full of dramatic tension, vividly showing the beauty of a short but profound encounter. Her voice is like a blooming rose, the piano sound is like dewdrops. The gentle accompaniment of the pianist is integrated with the song, which is a kind of beauty that makes people in soft boneless mood.

This kind of delicate rather than emotional exaggeration makes people completely immersed in the music.

Lukas' piano is even more memorable. His performance is not only a reproduction of the melody, but also a poetic . The light keys touch like the light wind in the ball, perfectly integrating sentimentality and romance. Tchaikovsky's waltz rhythm flows in the sound of the piano, while Grigorian's song is like a ray of warm morning light, awakening the affectionate memories in the words.

With her extremely infectious voice and deep understanding of music, she perfectly shows the silence of the night and the depths of her soul. In the silence of the secret night and other works bring the audience into a dreamlike emotional world through the exquisite combination of her voice and pianist Lukas.

在欣赏这些艺术歌曲同时，我又从中了解了一些过去熟悉或陌生的诗人 Afanasy Afanasyevich Fet

While enjoying these artistic songs, I have learned some familiar poets, also some unfamiliar poets like Afanasy Afanasyevich Fet.

He is a famous Russian poet and translator, and one of the outstanding figures in Russian literature in the 19th century. Fet is famous for his lyric poetry. His poems often explore the themes of nature, love and beauty, emphasizing musicality and vivid images. He is regarded as a master of lyric poetry, and his works often convey deep emotional resonance and philosophical reflection.

He was born in a family of German descent and spent his early years in the countryside. He also studied at Moscow University and served in the military.

His poetic style is often associated with the Romantic movement, focusing on personal, introspective experiences and the beauty of the natural world.

Fet's love poems are especially praised. His poems capture the subtle emotional state of love, often balancing desire and despair, beauty and loss. He has had several romances in his life, but his personal affairs often carry a sense of unrealized desire, which permeates most of his works.

Fet's poetry explores the fragile themes of love and emotions. Rachmaninoff's works are full of lyrical beauty, and the gorgeous piano accompaniment complements the emotional depth of poetry. He transformed literary poetry into evocative and shocking music, and Rachmaninoff captured the essence of Fett's poetry. Although Rachmaninoff's early songs are not as well-known as some later works, they still prove Rachmaninoff's early mastery of artistic song forms and his extraordinary ability to integrate deep emotions into music.

Asmik Grigorian's dramatic singing perfectly interprets Rachmaninoff's musical poetry. 这场音乐会不仅是艺术歌曲的盛宴，更是一场诗意与音乐交织的心灵之旅。在俄乌战争的阴影下，诗歌与音乐犹如治愈创伤的良药，为苦难中的人们带来希望与信心。成长于中国的我，对俄罗斯文化艺术始终怀有浓厚的情感，而今晚，我也深刻感受到，斯拉夫民族骨子里那份对俄罗斯文学、艺术与音乐的割舍不掉的热爱。艺术属于人类，它不属于战争贩子，导弹无法摧毁艺术的灵魂。音乐家们用音符传递爱与救赎，在音乐中，我们彼此慰藉。

音乐会结束后，观众纷纷上前献花致意。一位先生捧着一红一白的花束，向艺术家表达深深的敬意。

This concert is not only a feast of art songs, but also a spiritual journey intertwined with poetry and music. Under the shadow of the Russia-Ukraine war, poetry and music are like healing medicine for wounds, bringing hope and confidence to people in suffering. Growing up in China, I have always had a strong feeling for Russian culture and art, and tonight, I also deeply feel the inseparable love for Russian literature, art and music in the bones of the Slavic people. Art belongs to human beings. It does not belong to war traffickers. Missiles cannot destroy the soul of art. Musicians use notes to convey love and redemption, and in music, we comfort each other.

After the concert, the audience came forward to offer flowers to pay tribute. A gentleman held a red and white bouquet to express his deep respect to the artist.

Jeremy Geffen is the executive and artistic director of Cal Performances at the UC Berkeley. His management style and enthusiasm for art make him different from previous artistic directors. I see that he often shuttles through the crowd, communicates with the audience, and listens to their thoughts and feelings. This kind of intimate interaction makes people feel warm and respectful. For example, in the backstage, he told Asmik Grigorian that a group of Armenian audience was present that day, hoping to interact with her and take photos.

Mr. Geffen always smiled and showed an open and friendly attitude, which made me boldly come forward to communicate with him, and praised his taste in the artist's selection and repertoire formulation, thinking that he showed a high artistic aesthetic. This interaction must also make him feel the recognition from the audience and Support. This deep understanding of art and the audience makes Geffen a respected and beloved art director.

音乐会结束之后，后台等候着一批来自Armenia 的观众，希望与他们斯拉夫民族的艺术家交流与合影，气氛十分热烈。

钢琴伴奏的卢卡斯与Asmik是多年的艺术伙伴，也是一位极其出色的钢琴家。在演出中，他分别在上下半场穿插了两首钢琴独奏，不仅为Asmik争取片刻休息，也为观众呈现了他高超的演奏技艺。他们的默契合作，将“Russian Soul”刻画得深刻而动人，令人沉醉于音乐的灵魂深处。

与亲眼目睹银幕上感动过我的艺术家合影留念，又能赶上她第一次来美国的西海岸举办独唱音乐会，今年太有福气了。

走出剧场，柏克莱大学的钟楼正在唱着一组圣诞的歌曲，在这节日期间，湾区的人们沉浸在节日的聚会和购物中，而我却跑来剧场泡了一下午，沉浸在诗情画意的音乐中。每经历一场美梦般的诗情画意的音乐会，总让人产生一种奇妙的感觉，音乐会中的每一个音符、每一段旋律都能带领我们进入一种超越日常生活的境界。会感受到一种脱离现实的美，仿佛进入了一个梦境般的世界。这种体验往往是瞬间的，难以言喻的，即给人一种奇妙像是梦境般的真实，却又带有一种轻盈的超脱感。

这样的纯古典艺术歌曲中，收获了好多世界文学与诗歌，发现了更多的诗人与作品，更是一份意外的收获。

Walking out of the theater, the bell tower of Berkeley University was singing a group of Christmas songs. During this festival, people in the Bay Area were immersed in festive parties and shopping, while I ran to the theater whole afternoon, immersed in poetic music. Every time we experience a dreamy poetic and picturesque concert, always give people a wonderful feeling. Every note and every melody in the concert can lead us into a realm beyond daily life. You will feel a kind of beauty detached from reality, as if you have entered a dreamlike world. This kind of experience is often instantaneous and indescribable, that is, it gives people a wonderful dreamlike reality, with a sense of detachment.

In such pure classical art songs, a lot of world literature and poetry have been harvested, and more poets and works have been found, which is an unexpected discovery.
