我已经67岁，以前英语很差，学了很多年也开不了口。加入头马后改变了学习英语的方法，现在已经完成了Pathways 的L3P4，并且曾经在俱乐部的比赛中取得了第二名。

On New Year‘s day ，our club held the first meeting of this year. A news announced , we will have a speech contest. The president suggested me to take part in the contest ，I immediately answered： “No! I don't have the ability，”Actually ，I was afraid of the contest，”Are you afraid of the contest ？Maybe you're also afraid of the contest ．

How did I change，Do you want to know？

I realized that it would be a challenge for me ，I never had such experience ，I wanted to take part in contest， but I didn't have the confidence．there was confusion in my mind ，In fact, I was eligible for the contest ，I had finished level two of the pathway ，But I knew my language ability is very poor, Every time ，Writing English speech is very difficult for me ，I have to use translation software to finish my writing，

At this time，I thought of a story of my own, I swam across the Yangtze River in high school，It was one of the biggest challenges in my life，I Remember at that time，In order to take part in this activity, our school chose some students for training, I was the worst at training, I was always last, I didn’t have confidence ， I thought I would be eliminated，But our PE teacher encouraged me, he said ：swimming cross the Yangtze River is a challenge for everyone, When you face a challenge you must conquer yourself ，you must have confidence !

Your skill isn't good enough. I can teach you，But You must try your best to do it．

Since then，after each day's training,I spend more time to improve my skill ，It was really hard, But I persevered, At last I swam across the Yangtze River ，I was successful ！

This speech contest is also a challenge for me. But why am I afraid to face it?

非常惭愧，英语是我耗时最多的科目，时间长达几十年，最初学英语还是初中的时候，在我们那个年代小学是不开英语课的，我们初一开英语课，但是基本上没学到什么东西，到高中毕业我也只记得“毛主席万岁”这一句话，高中毕业我上山下乡两年然后又当了一年的纺织工人。恢复高考后我七八年考取了医学院，好在那年的英语不记入总分，我才考了11分，那时候我26个字母都记不全了，上了医学院我们学的是医学英语，只会读写不会说，那就是一个哑巴英语。那个时候也很想摆脱困境，就省吃节用下决心买一台收录机，我记得一台砖头大的小收录机花了我80元人民币，那可是一年的火食费，我们那个时候每个月的饭钱也就7元左右。那个年代读大学英语也没要求考级，本科毕业后因为想考研究生，就自己自学了公共英语，学了许国章的教材，学了新概念。可是仍然还是开不了口。后来还学过一些口语教材，Follow me 、step by step ，走遍美国，免强可以说几句。因为我学英语没有目标所以也没有动力。总是断断续续的在学，事倍功半，而且因为成家生育孩子，忙于工作，就一直没学好。

虽然自己的英语没学好，走了一些弯路，但是我的经历让我体会到学语言一定要会听会说，不然是很难与别人交流的。我用这个理念指导了我儿子，所以儿子的英语学得很棒，他本科毕业后考取了美国的哥仑比亚大学。硕士毕业后在美国找到了工作，找到了另一半，成家生了孩子，儿子在美国定居后我又有了学英语的动力，可是一晃我都六十几岁了，该怎么学呢？我想还是要以交流为目的，于是我开始寻找英语角，通过参加英语角的活动我又听说了头马俱乐部

开始我只是以嘉宾的身份参加会议，每次开会总是糊里糊涂的，大部分听不懂，没搞清楚大家在讲什么，后来参加得多了才慢慢明白一点，是怎么回事，最后彻底搞清楚头马是一个什么样的组织，为什么这个组织这么有魅力，能坚持这么久，能有一百年的历史，而且遍布世界一百多个国家呢？我也想亲自体验一下成为头马会员会有什么收获。

成为头马的会员后，我得到了许多帮助，我的导师Samantha、当时的主席Jenny还有许多老会员都给予了我很多指导。在他们的引领下我一步一步走到今天。同时自己也获得了一些经验，不但学以致用，而且用以致学。

改变以前只学不用的方法，并且着重以用致学，以具体任务为导向，目标精准的学习，真正的提高实际的交流能力。具体做法

对于刚入俱乐部不久的会员来说，这个项目是有一定难度的，当时我不知从何下手写演讲稿，后来听了Emma关于《果蝇》的演讲受到一点启发，于是自己就开始关注一些信息，我有时候会去听一下VOA慢速英语的文章，有一天我我听到下面这篇文章，刚好文字有中、英文对照的，

Whether electric cars are environmentally friendly

Electric vehicles (EVs) are a strong weapon in the world's efforts against global warming. But the effects of EVs depend on what country you are in. In some nations, electric vehicles lead to the release of more carbon gasses than gasoline cars, new research shows.

电动汽车是世界应对全球变暖的有力武器。但是电动汽车的效果取决于你所在的国家。新研究表明，在一些国家，电动汽车比燃油汽车的碳排放更高。

The Radiant Energy Group (REG) compared gas emissions caused by a gasoline vehicle and from charging an electric vehicle. The study compared the emissions caused by charging a Tesla Model 3 to drive 100 kilometers with the emissions coming from an average gasoline car driven the same distance.

Countries where charging an electric vehicle is cleaner than driving a gasoline-powered car use a lot of hydroelectric, nuclear or solar power.

Sales of electric cars are rising the fastest in Europe. Data from REG suggests that EVs in Poland and Kosovo actually create more carbon emissions because their electric systems depend so much on coal.

In other European countries, however, EVs result in reduced emissions. The carbon gas reduction depends on what energy supplies electricity systems and the time of day vehicles are charged.

The countries with the biggest carbon gas savings from EVs use a lot of nuclear and hydroelectric power. First was Switzerland at 100 percent carbon savings over gasoline vehicles. The research was based on public data on Europe's electricity usage and the European Environment Agency (EEA).

An EV driver in Germany reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent over a gasoline car. Germany uses a mix of renewable energy and coal to produce electricity.

Germany and Spain create a lot of electricity from the sun and wind. But the sun and wind do not add to a country's electricity system equally throughout the day.

For this reason, the amount of carbon emissions saved by driving an EV depends on the time of day it is being charged. Charging in the afternoon, when there is more sun and wind, saves 16 to 18 percent carbon than at night when electricity systems are more likely to be using gas or coal.

The study was released just before Wednesday's talks on transportation at the United Nations' climate meeting in Glasgow. During the meeting, a group of countries, companies and cities promised to stop making gas-powered cars by 2040.

As a result, the carbon emissions of new gasoline-powered cars in Europe fell an average of 25 percent between 2006 and 2016, EEA information says.

Plastics and health

Is there a relationship between plastic and health? Maybe people don't think about it，But in fact ，the plastic is already having a big impact on our health.

Plastics are everywhere - in what we wear, in the tools we use, in vehicles we drive, in stores, our homes and where we work.

Plastics can be shaped into almost anything and for almost any purpose.They are shaped to make car parts, bottles, toys, shoes, rugs, and clothing fibers. They have become part of our everyday life.

Plastic don't occur naturally; manufacturers make them.They are not found in nature, so no organisms exist that can break them down completely.

That is, plastics don't biodegrade, they just break into smaller and smaller pieces. This is a huge problem.

Plastics smaller than 5 millimeters (5 mm) are called microplastics.

They have been found in the deepest parts of the sea, in the dirt, and in wildlife.

Microfibers are another type of microplastic used in the manufacturing of clothing.shed tiny fibers into the air when we wear them and into the water when we wash them.

Many microfibers are too small to get caught in the filters of washing

machines or wastewater treatment plants. As a result, they wind up in our waterways and in the water we drink.

Even worse are nanoplastics. Those are pieces of plastic that are even smaller than the tiny microplastics. A piece of nanoplastic is less than 1/7oth as wide as a human hair. Nanoplastics are small enough to get into a person's blood, liver, and brain.

There are thousands of kinds of plastics. More than 10,000 chemicals are used to make them. some plastics release chemicals which are harmful to human health ．

Now you know the relationship between plastic and health．So For health，let's try to use less plastic products and Recycle plastics as much as possible．
