On 16th August 2024, I travelled to Bosnia and Herzegovina. This was my first time visiting this fascinating country, and I was eager to discover its rich history and culture. Bosnia and Herzegovina, nestled in the heart of the Balkans, is a country known for its diverse landscapes, blending mountains, rivers, and historic cities. It's a place where East meets West, with a unique cultural tapestry shaped by centuries of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian rule. So why did I visit this country? Well, there isn't much difference between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the other countries I've recently visited, such as Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia. You could say I was inspired by someone to visit this country, but it wasn't really inspiration; it was more of a recommendation. A friend of mine, Dino Djulbic, whom I met in Australia, suggested that I should visit his homeland. Dino was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina but migrated to Australia, where he became a professional soccer player. He's been a nice fellow to me, and I've always wondered when he might return to visit his ancestors so we could catch up. His recommendation gave me the final push to explore Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnia and Herzegovina is renowned for its cultural heritage that blends Eastern and Western influences due to its historical position at the crossroads of different civilizations. The country features numerous architectural styles ranging from Ottoman mosques to Austro-Hungarian buildings. The natural landscape of Bosnia and Herzegovina is characterized by stunning mountains, rivers, and national parks. In recent years, tourism has become increasingly important for Bosnia and Herzegovina's economy. Visitors are drawn to its historical sites, natural beauty, outdoor activities like hiking or rafting, as well as cultural festivals that celebrate local traditions. Bosnia and Herzegovina is renowned for its rich cultural heritage that combines various influences from different periods in history; stunning natural landscapes; delicious cuisine; significant historical landmarks; and emerging tourism opportunities that showcase both its past and present. One of the biggest highlights of my trip was the opportunity to speak the local language with a few locals and interact with them on various topics. The people I met were incredibly kind and friendly, and they made me feel welcome in their country. We even shared photos together, creating lasting memories. To top it off, they treated me to a local lunch, and I found the food to be quite delicious, particularly the ćevapi—a type of grilled minced meat dish that is absolutely wonderful! I only went to three cities in Bosnia & Herzegovina, but let's talk about one of them: Sarajevo. I arrived in Sarajevo on 16th August 2024 and was immediately captivated by the city's unique blend of cultures and history. The city is often referred to as the "Jerusalem of Europe" due to its unique coexistence of different religions and cultures. Sarajevo is home to a mix of Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims), Croats (Catholic), and Serbs (Orthodox), which contributes to its vibrant cultural tapestry. This diversity is celebrated through various festivals, culinary traditions, and religious practices that coexist harmoniously within the city. Sarajevo's tourism potential remains significant due to its historical landmarks and natural surroundings. Attractions such as Baščaršija (the old bazaar), Vrelo Bosne (a picturesque spring), and various museums dedicated to both art and history draw tourists from around the world. Additionally, winter sports enthusiasts flock to nearby mountains like Jahorina and Bjelasnica during ski season.Sarajevo stands as a symbol of resilience amidst adversity. Its rich historical narrative combined with cultural diversity makes it a unique destination worthy of exploration. As it continues to evolve economically while addressing past challenges, Sarajevo remains an essential part of Bosnia and Herzegovina's identity. During my time in Sarajevo, I visited a few iconic spots. Sarajevo City Hall: This beautiful building, with its Austro-Hungarian architecture, is one of the city’s most important landmarks. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, I could only stroll around its exterior, but even from the outside, it was clear how significant this building is to Sarajevo's history. Latin Bridge: The Latin Bridge is famously known as the site of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, an event that triggered World War I. Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque: As one of the most important Islamic structures in the Balkans, the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque is must-see in Sarajevo. Again, time was limited, so I only explored the exterior, but the intricate designs and the peaceful ambiance of the courtyard left a lasting impression. Sebilj Fountain, located in the heart of the old town, is a symbol of Sarajevo. I took my time strolling around these areas, amazed at the historical significance of these sites. Sacred Heart Cathedral: This Catholic cathedral, with its neo-Gothic architecture, is another symbol of Sarajevo's diverse religious landscape. I strolled around the exterior, appreciating the contrast between the mosque I had just visited and this Christian church, reflecting the city's rich history. Eternal Flame: This monument commemorates the military and civilian victims of World War II in Sarajevo. Walking around this monument, I was reminded of the resilience and enduring spirit of the people of this city. During my recent travels, I had the incredible opportunity to immerse myself in the rich culinary traditions of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The experience was nothing short of delightful, as I discovered a variety of local dishes that reflect the country’s diverse cultural influences and historical heritage. During my travels in Bosnia and Herzegovina, I had the opportunity to try a delightful dish known as fish and chips. I must say that they are tasty! The combination of crispy fried fish paired with perfectly cooked chips made for a satisfying meal that reflects the local culinary influences. I also had the pleasure of trying the local dish of Bosnia and Herzegovina: beef and chips! The beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, perfectly complemented by crispy chips. I must say that they are tasty and truly represent the hearty cuisine of this region. After visiting Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina on 17th August 2024, I travelled to Mostar, the other city on my travel agenda. Mostar is a city located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, specifically serving as the administrative center of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. It is situated on the banks of the Neretva River, which has played a crucial role in its historical development and trade routes. The city is known for its picturesque landscapes and is surrounded by mountains, making it a visually stunning location. Today, Mostar attracts tourists from around the world who come to admire its stunning architecture, explore its historic sites like Old Bazaar Kujundziluk, and experience its unique cultural atmosphere. Mostar stands as a testament to resilience amid adversity. Its rich history intertwined with cultural diversity makes it a fascinating destination for those seeking to understand both its past struggles and present vibrancy. In Mostar, I visited two iconic spots. Mostar Peace Bell Tower: I strolled inside this magnificent tower and was blown away by the lovely interiors. The view from the top is spectacular, offering a panoramic vista of Mostar and its surrounding landscapes. Mostar Old Town: Strolling through the narrow streets of Mostar's Old Town was like stepping back in time. I encountered the famous Mostar Old Bridge Area, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The bridge itself is an architectural marvel, but the area was crowded, making it a bit dangerous to stop and block others. Nevertheless, the experience was worth it, as I felt a deep connection to the history and culture of this place. I had the pleasure of experiencing one of the most cherished staples in Bosnia and Herzegovina: bread. Known locally as "lepinja" or "somun", this traditional flatbread is often served as an entrée alongside various dishes. Its soft, fluffy texture and slightly crispy exterior make it a perfect accompaniment to grilled meats, stews, or even enjoyed on its own with a drizzle of olive oil. The aroma of freshly baked bread wafted through the air, inviting me to savor every bite. This local delicacy not only represents the culinary heritage of the region but also embodies the warmth and hospitality of Bosnian culture. I had the pleasure of experiencing one of the most cherished dishes in Bosnia and Herzegovina: traditional soup. This hearty soup, often made with a rich broth and a variety of ingredients such as vegetables, meat, and spices, serves as a comforting entree that reflects the country's culinary heritage. The flavors are robust and warming, making it a perfect start to any meal. I savored every spoonful, appreciating how this dish embodies the local culture and hospitality. I had the pleasure of trying a traditional salad from Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is often served as an entree. This vibrant dish typically includes fresh ingredients such as tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, onions, and sometimes olives or feta cheese. The salad is usually dressed with a simple mixture of olive oil, vinegar, salt, and pepper, allowing the natural flavors of the vegetables to shine through. It's a refreshing start to any meal and reflects the region's emphasis on fresh produce and healthy eating. I had the pleasure of trying a traditional main course from Bosnia and Herzegovina, which consisted of fried rice served with bread and beef in a savory sauce. The combination of flavors was rich and satisfying, showcasing the hearty nature of Bosnian cuisine. I indulged in the delightful local food of Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly their exquisite ice cream. This creamy treat is a perfect way to conclude a satisfying lunch, offering a refreshing contrast to the savory dishes I enjoyed earlier. The unique flavors and textures of Bosnian ice cream truly encapsulate the essence of this region’s culinary culture. After strolling around Mostar in the afternoon, I traveled to the third and final city on my Bosnia and Herzegovina tour: Neum. Neum is a town and municipality located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, specifically within the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. It holds the unique distinction of being the only coastal town in Bosnia and Herzegovina, providing the country with its sole access to the Adriatic Sea. The town is situated approximately 47 kilometers northwest of Dubrovnik, Croatia, and serves as a crucial geographical point that separates parts of Croatia’s coastline. Neum celebrates its cultural heritage through events such as the Etnofest Neum and the Neum Animated Film Festival. These festivals highlight local traditions and foster community engagement while attracting visitors from outside the region. In summary, Neum stands out as an important coastal town in Bosnia and Herzegovina, characterized by its unique geographical position, rich historical background, vibrant tourism sector, and cultural significance. In Neum, there wasn't much to stroll around, but I did visit one interesting iconic spot and that is Neum Beach. I managed to stroll around this lovely beach and experience a wonderful sunset. The serene atmosphere and the gentle sound of the waves made it a perfect way to end my day in Neum. It was a peaceful and relaxing experience, offering a different side of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This unique geographical feature provides Bosnia and Herzegovina with direct access to the Adriatic Sea, making it a significant spot for both locals and tourists. The beach is characterized by its pebbly shores and crystal-clear waters, which are typical of the region's Mediterranean climate. Despite its small size and limited attractions compared to other coastal towns in Croatia or Montenegro, Neum Beach offers a unique experience due to its cultural heritage and natural beauty. Visitors often appreciate the quieter atmosphere away from crowded tourist hotspots. Neum Beach stands out as a unique coastal gem within Bosnia and Herzegovina, providing visitors with an opportunity to enjoy beautiful Adriatic waters while experiencing local culture at a more affordable price point than neighboring countries. As I prepare to leave this beautiful town, I carry with me not just souvenirs but also memories that will last a lifetime. Neum, you have captured my heart, and though I must say goodbye for now, I hope to return someday. Until we meet again! Visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina was an enriching experience that left a lasting impression on me. Its historical significance, cultural diversity, warm people, and stunning landscapes make it a destination worth exploring again. The country's rich history, diverse culture, and warm-hearted people left a lasting impression on me. I hope to return to this beautiful country in the future to explore different cities and regions that I missed during my initial visit. Each area has its unique charm; for example, Tuzla is known for its salt lakes while Jajce features picturesque waterfalls. There's so much more to discover! Additionally, I look forward to reconnecting with my friend Dino Djulbic during my next visit.
