<p class="ql-block">《sutter's mill》中文译为《萨特的磨坊》，是奥斯卡电影《三步杀人曲》中的插曲。这也是Dan Fogelberg（丹 弗格伯特顿）较有影响力的一首乡村名谣，歌曲以叙事的手法，记讲述磨坊人寻宝命运．略显苍凉的嗓音与稍快的鼓点给人的感觉正如人生步履匆匆，过段引插的口琴，又似隐隐吹奏着人生的无奈……</p> <p class="ql-block">天然的西部乡村音乐风格，口琴、班卓、吉他、Dobro、Fiddle的伴奏，再配上Dan Fogelberg那草原落日般的嗓音，让我在第一次听到这首歌的时候不自觉被它那穿越漫漫时空的沧桑感所击倒，而后，当我看到了歌词，我无语。</p><p class="ql-block">百年之前，一队又一队的美国先驱，乘着大蓬车，穿越茫茫大平原和高高洛基山，怀着淘金梦来到西部。百年之后，一队又一队的我们，乘着飞机，飞越烟波浩淼的太平洋来到同一个地方，也许我们各自的想法千差万别，但不可否认，我们都怀着自己的美国梦。百年之前，有人会死在羽箭和枪弹之下，有人会一夜暴富。百年之后，你我中一样有人也会倒在残酷的竞争之下，有人则会功成名就。于是，当听到“Some fell prey to hostile arrows，As they tried to cross the plains. And some were lost in the Rocky Mountains，With their hands froze to the reins.” 我的心中突然涌起一种深深的苍凉之感，你呢？</p><p class="ql-block"></p> <p class="ql-block">《萨特的磨坊》 创作背景</p><p class="ql-block">歌曲里的主人公：Johann Augustus Sutter （1803-1880），1803年2月15日出生在德国卡登，23岁时娶了一个富有寡妇的女儿为妻，经营着一家商店。可是他赚钱的本领远没有花钱的大，于是1834年5月13日为免因债台高筑而面临的牢狱之灾，丢下老婆和5个孩子，从瑞士进入法国而后乘船到美国。在美国到处闯荡，伪造了个军衔变成“萨特上尉”。1839年7月1日他到了个小小的传教站－－现在的旧金山前身，在加尼福利亚，他与印第安人和平相处，定居下来。1840年8月他加入墨西哥国籍，并成功游说了墨西哥总督胡安阿尔瓦多，得到了两百平方英里的处女地。8月中旬他在萨克拉门托河与美洲河交汇处落脚，开始建立要塞，并命名他的王国为新瑞士。1847年墨西哥战败，萨特一开始支持成立一个独立的加利福尼亚共和国，但当美国军队一度控制了他的堡垒，他放弃了抵抗。北美的第一次大淘金热于1848年发生在加利福尼亚萨克拉门托河附近萨特的磨坊。1847年——1848年冬天，J.A．萨特正在建造一锯木厂，他的木匠J．马歇尔（James.W.Marshall）于1月24日发现了黄金，消息立即传了出去。萨特与马歇尔已同意成为合伙人，但不久即被几千名寻求发财的人围困住，他们搭上帐篷，为了黄金不顾环境如何。1849年，约有8万名淘金人蜂拥来到加利福尼亚黄金矿区。1853年，到达的人数为25万。与典型的形式相同，当绝大多数可开采的矿藏枯竭，有组织的资本和设备以更有效与更商业化的经营替代个体采金者时，淘金热势头减弱。同时，无法无天、狂暴的淘金营地也让位给由政府与执法部门管理的永久性拓居地。当黄金采尽，缺乏其他有生气的经济活动时，这些拓居地变成了被废弃的鬼镇。鼎盛时期，他占地近5万多公顷、牛马羊无数。慷慨大方、乐善好施，而在瑞士的老婆孩子却挣扎在贫困线上。1855年，由于墨西哥战败，美国联邦土地局起诉他，将其三分之二的土地没收。北美的第一次大淘金成了萨特一生的转折点－－它们毁了他，从此他和他的王国开始衰败。1880年6月18日，他死在国会山附近的小旅馆里。6个月后他的妻子病故与其安葬在一起。</p>
