May 19, 2023

The Idiom I Most Like for Modifying Person’s Demeanor

I am delighted to have recently learned some English vocabulary. These words can be used to effectively describe and modify someone's actions, behavior, or conduct, conveying their qualities or characteristics. It is important to use these words appropriately and in the right context to convey the intended meaning. For example, positive words include such adjectives as calm, polite, gracious, humble, and gracious, and negative words include such adjectives as reckless, jumpy, panicky, noisy, annoyed, lazy, worried, and anxious.

These words remind me of similar expressions and idioms in my native language: Chinese. According to various sources, there are estimated to be tens of thousands of idioms in Chinese. Some sources suggest that there are around 20,000 to 30,000 commonly used idioms, while others claim the number exceeds 50,000. It's important to note that not all idioms are actively used, and many are more commonly encountered in written texts, literature, or specific contexts.

Personally, I have learned a few of them, perhaps less than 1,000, which would be considered a moderate level of familiarity among intellectuals. These amounts do not include general words besides idioms.

However, only the amount of vocabulary mastered is not the sole factor in personal cultivation. Knowledge, demeanor, attitude, manners, speech, wisdom, and expression are crucial aspects to consider.

One of my favorite Chinese poems is by Su Shi, a sage poet from the Song Dynasty. He wrote, “Wrap your life in rough clothes; have a poetic and scholarly spirit within.” The essence of the poem lies in the second half of the sentence, expressed through a four-character idiom that roughly as translated in “腹诗气华” means “poetry is inside, but talent and splendor are outward” .

This idiom beautifully captures the essence of refining one's demeanor. It reminds us that true elegance and charisma stem not only from outward appearances but also from the inner reservoirs of talent and wisdom. Our actions, attitude, and speech reflect our internal cultivation and character.

By nurturing our inner selves, we cultivate genuine wisdom, emotional intelligence, and creativity, which naturally radiate through our external . It is crucial, therefore, to focus on expanding our knowledge, fostering the right attitude, practicing good manners, and continually honing our communication skills. Only through comprehensive cultivation in these areas can we truly become individuals who possess both inner substance and external grace.

Cultivating an elegant demeanor primarily comes from cultural knowledge, reading, and continuous learning. I have devoted a significant amount of time and energy to studying in the first half of my life, and I am determined to continue studying diligently in the years to come."
