in the north get the first yellow and golden tones in October. The central part of the state, namely the Arkansas River Valley and Ouachita State Park, start to turn a week or so later, reaching full transformation in early November. The southern part of the state usually dresses up in gold by mid-November. 

Arkansas fall foliage tours should be planned around the peak color times of each region of the state. Generally, significant color change begins in the Ozarks of northern Arkansas in late September or early October. The trees in central Arkansas and the Ouachita mountain range of west central Arkansas are changing noticeably by early to mid-October. Southern and eastern Arkansas foliage usually begins changing during mid-October.

Most people, however, are more interested in the "peak" of color. There is usually a period of a week or so when the fall foliage in a particular area is at its best. Normally, the peak of color occurs around two or three weeks after color changes begin, meaning late October for the Ozarks, late October or early November for central and western Arkansas, and early to mid-November for the southern and eastern sections.

The higher elevations of the Ozarks and Ouachitas will change color first. The best colors there come in late October and the first week of November, on average.

Northwest Arkansas will see the best colors at the very, very end of Oct. into the first 12 days of November. It usually peaks somewhere right in the middle of that time .

The River Valley and northeast Oklahoma usually see the best colors from Nov. 2 to Nov. 25.

Roark Bluff Falls, Buffalo National River

Both of these falls are at Steel Creek Campground in the Buffalo National River (Newton County). They are easy to get to and can be viewed from the car.

The first falls you will come to is Roark Bluff Falls. This waterfall can be seen from the road and can have a really impressive flow off the large bluff.

If you keep driving, V-Notch Falls appears just behind the first campsites you come to at the campground area. To get the best view of the falls you will need to walk into the woods behind the first campsites to the river and get to where the trees don’t completely block your view. Be careful though, as the Buffalo River may be really high so don’t wade into murky water!

Both of these falls tumble more than 100 feet over Roark Bluff and are a sight to behold.

Again, don’t expect these to be flowing other than during very high water. But when they’re flowing, they are very cool.

I’ve seen these two waterfalls be called various things depending on the source — but these are the names given to the falls by the folks at the Buffalo Outdoor Center, so I consider them a very knowledgeable source of the area.

V-Notch Falls 

Day 4 (10/26): drive toHawksbill Crag/Whitaker Point, Co Rd 406, Kingston, AR 72742

Ozark Mountain Ziplines, 208 W Van Buren, Eureka Springs, AR 72632 /Whitaker Point (1Hr 10 min) and then walk for a 2.9 miles out-back trail (may takes 3 hours at this site). Take a good photo at the hangover rock. Make sure to download an off-site map because there is no internet or restroom in the area. Drive along CR 43, once cross CR 21, get on CR 5. Follow CR 5 and then get on ton CR 406 until you reach the trailhead. The trail entrance has a small sign (make sure to locate it right) with a small Rock near a small gravel parking area. Make sure not to visit it on weekends! Tuesday through Thursday early morning would be great! If the parking area is full, parking is allowed along the sides of the dirt road as long as it is not blocking local traffic.
