Children had a rich experience and I appreciate their efforts to follow directions, open mind, and display some characteristics of grit.</span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="font-size: 20px; color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">晨会Morning meeting</span></p><p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Morning meetings always started with warm and interesting greetings to create a welcoming and comfortable learning environment. In the morning, students played games to introduce themselves and get to know each other. They also played some games to practice their concentration, observation and listening skills through some fun games such as splat and werewolf. During these games, Students not only practiced their Chinese speaking skills, but also had fun and were prepared for the following lessons.</span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="font-size: 20px; color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">中文课Chinese Language Arts</span></p><p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Students learned and practiced their Chinese understanding, reading, writing, and listening around this week’s topic, Making a Safe Car. Students could understand why passengers need to wear seat belts, what makes are there car crashes, how we can reduce speed which affect the force. To meet these goals, we learned lessons step by step.</span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Day 1, we read a book called “If I could build a car” to introduce this week’s learning topic and stimulate students’ thinking and imagination.</span></p><p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Day 2, we read some stories about the famous scientist Isaac Newton. We learned who Newton is and what great achievements he accomplished in his lifetime. We then introduced the Newton’s First Law by playing games and connecting to our daily lives to prove the first law.</span></p><p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Day 3, we introduced Newton’s Second and Third Laws to understand action and reaction and why speed matters. By learning these two laws, students understood why there are car crashes, why speed matters and how to reduce the speed. We learned the science by playing games and looking for activities in which Newton’s Third Law applies.</span></p><p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Day 4, we learned about past, current, and future methods of transportation. Students learned how to say our current methods of transportation into Chinese and use their own imagination to design their future cars. They were very good at word recognition, even when shown words at a fast pace. Students read Picture Words (both sides of the cards were used, starting off with pictures and eventually the children learned to read them without pictures). Students answered multiple choice questions about the text, identified challenging vocabulary words and engaged in group discussions.</span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74); font-size: 20px;">Group C </span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">This week, our fourth and fifth graders learned about nonfiction and fiction by reading about endangered species and a famous folktale; they also learned about creating stories and mystery fiction during the days we played Werewolf, a game our students seemed to love</span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="font-size: 20px; color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Group D</span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">This week students read the short story “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan. They learned about Tan’s life and important historical events that occurred during that time, along with thorough discussion and analysis key events in the story. Students made personal connections with the author and characters and played group games to get to know their classmates better.</span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="font-size: 20px; color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">科技应用课 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)</span></p><p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Based on the science knowledge that students learned in the morning, our students became great engineers and designed their safety-oriented cardboard cars. Students followed engineers’ working process to do this project.</span></p><p class="ql-block"><br></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Day 1, students use their imagination to design their cars.</span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Day 2, based on the scientific knowledge they learned in the morning, students start to create their cars by using provided materials.</span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Day 3, According to Newton’s second law and third law, students tested and improved their cars. </span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Day 4, Students use raw eggs as passengers in their cars to test collisions on a 2.5-meter-long track with a 1.5-meter tall ramp.</span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Day 5, We discussed how to make an environmentally friendly car. </span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74); font-size: 20px;">活动中心Activity Center</span></p><p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">What a great place to spice up student’s life and make new friends! We provide the meaningful activities and student can make free-choice learning and understanding by investigating personal interest, need and/or curiosity in this leisure time. </span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74); font-size: 20px;">象棋课 Chess Class</span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Students learned about various tactics such as pins, forks, discovered attacks, and skewers and about basic endgame technique. They also played many chess games with their peers and teachers to develop their skills.</span></p> <p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74); font-size: 20px;">画画课Drawing Class</span></p><p class="ql-block"><span style="color: rgb(57, 181, 74);">Instead of playing chess, some students choose drawing. In drawing we primarily focused on the basics, such as blocking out basic shapes beforehand and lightly sketching rather than pressing into the paper too hard.
