A family of lark once lived in a field of

ripening corn.Every day when she went

to look for food, the mother told her

chicks:

从前，云雀一家住在一片即将成熟的庄稼地里。每天早上云雀妈妈出去觅食时，都要告诉小云雀们：

"Listen carefully to everything you hear.

One day soon the reapers will come to

cut the corn, and we must find another

home before that happens."

“仔细听清你们听到的每一件事情。很快就会在某一天，收割者就会来收割庄稼了，我们必须在收割前找到另一处家。”

One day while she was away the farmer

came to examine the corn.

有一天，正当她离开时，一个农夫前来检查庄稼了。

“It is time to get my neighbours together

to cut the corn,"he said to his son.

他对他儿子说，“是时候把邻居们叫到一起收割庄稼了。”

The little larks listened carefully and told

their mother what he had said.

小云雀们听得很仔细，然后就告诉他们的妈妈他说了些什么。

"Let's go at once,"they cried."The reapers

will be here in the morning and we shall

be not able to escape."

"There is plenty of time yet,"said the

mother lark calmly."If he is relying on

his neighbours he have to wait some

time before he get the corn in."

The next day the farmer came again. The

sun was hotter than ever, and the corn

was riper but nothing had been done

to harvist it.

"There is no time to lose,"he said."It is no

use depending on the neighbours. I must

get all my relations to help."He turned to

his son."Go and call your uncles and

cousins and make sure they begin

tomorrow without fail."

”不能再浪费时间了，“他说，”要靠邻居是没有用的。我必须要让亲戚们来帮忙。“他有对儿子说，”去把你叔叔和堂兄们叫来，务必确保明天就能开始收割。“

注1：without fail,务必，一定。

The little larks were frightened and again

they begged their mother to take them

away at once.

小云雀们害怕了，他们有请求妈妈立即将他们带走。

"If that is all he said there is nothing to

worry about. His relations have

harvesting of their own to do.He won't

get them to do his work for a while yet.

But tomorrow listen carefully. I want to

know every word he says."

“如果他说的就是这些，那就没什么好担心的。他的亲戚们有自己的庄稼要收获。暂时他还不会叫得到他们来为他干活。但明天仔细听好了。我要知道他说的每一句话。”

The next day the farmer came as usual to

inspect the grain.Now the corn was so

ripe that it was beginning to fall to the

ground, but still no one had come to cut

it.

第二天，农夫与往常一样来检查庄稼。现在庄稼已经熟透了，以至于开始垂到了地上，但还是没有人来收割。

"We cannot wait for our neighbours and

relations a day longer,"said the farmer."

Go and hire some men and we will start

work tomorrow ourselves."

“我们不能再等邻居和亲戚了，一天也不能等了。“农夫说，“快去雇些人来，我们明天就开始自己干了。”

”Take us away, take us away,"said little larks as soon as their mother returned."They are going to cut corn tomorrow."

"What exactly did they say?"asked the

mother,"Did they say they cut the corn

themselves?"

"It really is time to go then,"said the

mother,"？If a man decide to do

something himself instead of leaving it

to other people, then he means to get it

done. Come,Try out your wings. We

must fly to the next meadow."

A leopard and a fox were arguing about which of them was the better animal. 豹和狐狸在争论他们俩到底谁更好。 "My spotted coat is the most beautiful fur in the world,"said the leapard.

One day, a dog found a hare hiding under a bush. The hare streaked off across the fields with the dog bounding along behind. Aesop and the Wrestler(摔跤手)

Aesop was talking to the winner of a Greek wrestling competition.

伊索与摔跤手

伊索跟一个希腊摔跤手谈话。

"Congratulations on your win!" he said.

“祝贺你胜利！”他说。

"Tell me, were you smaller and weaker

than your opponent(对手)?"

告诉我，你是否比对手矮小且瘦弱？

"What do you mean?" said the wrestler(摔跤手), angrily.

“你是什么意思?”摔跤手生气地说。

"I am the biggest and strongest wrestler(摔跤手) in the whole of Greece!"

“我是全希腊最高大最强壮的摔跤手！”

"In that case, I dont think you deserve much praise after all," said Aesop.

伊索说，“如果是那样的话，我认为你不该受到那么多的赞扬。”

"It is easy to win when you are bigger and

stronger. If your opponent(对手) had been

bigger and stronger than you,and you had

still won, then I would really have been

impressed."

“当你更高大，更强壮时，更容易获得胜利。但如果你的对手比你更高大且更强壮，而你仍然赢了，让才真的让人敬佩。”

MORAL: Dont be proud of your natural abilities, be proud of what you do with them.

寓意：不要因你的本能而自高自大，而因你用你自身的能力做出的奉献而感到自豪。

Androcles and the Lion

安德鲁克里斯与狮子

A slave named Androcles once escaped

from his master and ran away to the

forest.

从前有个奴隶名字叫安德鲁克里斯，一次他从奴隶主那里逃脱出来，奔森林而去。

As he was walking about there, he saw

a lion lying down, crying in pain.

他在森林里漫步时，看到了一头躺倒的狮子正在痛苦地呻吟着。

At first he turned to run, but finding that

the lion did not chase(追捕) him,

开始时，他转身就跑，但发现狮子并没有追捕他，

he turned back and went up to him.

他转了回来，然后向狮子走去。

As he came near, the lion put out his

paw(爪子), which was all swollen(肿胀)

and bleeding.

当他走近时，狮子伸出了爪子。爪都肿了，且在滴血。

Androcles saw that a huge thorn(棘刺) had got into it, and was causing all the pain.

安德鲁克里斯发现，那是一根巨大的棘刺刺入了狮爪，并造成了所有这些疼痛。

He pulled out the thorn(棘刺) and wrapped(包扎) up the paw(爪子) of the lion,

他拔的出了这根棘刺，并将狮爪包扎了起来。

who was soon able to rise and lick(舔)

the hand of Androcles like a dog.

狮子很快就能站起来了，它像狗一样舔了舔安德鲁克里斯的手。

Then the lion took Androcles to his cave,

and brought him meat to eat every day.

然后狮子将安德鲁克里斯带到了山洞里，且每天都带肉给他吃。

A little while afterwards both Androcles and the lion were caught,

不久后，安德鲁克里斯和狮子都被抓了，

and the slave was sentenced to be thrown

to the lion,after the lion had been kept without food for several days.

而且这个奴隶被判在狮子断食数天后扔给狮子吞食。

The Emperor and all his Court came to

see the show,

皇帝和所有他的宫人都来看这场表演。

and Androcles was led out into the

middle of the arena(竞技场).

安德鲁克里斯被带到了竞技场中间。

Soon the lion was let loose(释放), and

rushed jumping and roaring(咆哮)

towards his victim.

狮子被放出来了，他又跑又喊地冲向了他的牺牲品。

But as soon as he came near to Androcles

he recognized his friend,

但他一走近安德鲁克里斯就认出了这是他的朋友。

came gently up to him, and licked(舔) his

hands like a friendly dog.

狮子慢慢走近他，像只友好的狗舔舔他的手。

The Emperor, surprised at this, asked

Androcles if he knew why the lion

behaved this way,

皇帝对此很惊奇，并问安德鲁克里斯是否知道为什么狮子会有此表现。

and Androcles told him the whole story.

安德鲁克里斯将整个故事告诉了皇上。

Then the slave Androcles was freed, and the lion was also set free again in the forest.

从此，奴隶安德鲁克里斯就被释放了，狮子也恢复了自由重新回到森林。

MORAL: Bravery in taking care of others

is often well rewarded.

寓言:勇敢关爱他人常有好报。

The Ant and the Caterpillar(毛虫)

An ant running about in the sunshine looking for food met a caterpillar(毛虫) that was almost at its time of change,

and had already wrapped(包裹) a hard shell(外壳) about itself.

The ant only noticed that the caterpillar(毛虫) was even alive because of a tiny movement of its tail.

"Oh, what an unhappy animal you are!" said the ant.

"I can climb up to the top of the tallest tree, but you can hardly even move!"

The caterpillar(毛虫) heard all this, but did not reply.

A few days later, when the ant passed by again, only the shell(外壳) was left.

As he wondered what had happened, he felt himself in the shade(阴影).

He looked up and felt himself fanned by the wings of a beautiful butterfly.

"Look at me now," said the butterfly,

"the one you felt so sorry for!

Tell me now what a good runner and climber you areif you can keep up with me!"

Then the butterfly flew up into the air, carried high and far on the summer winds,

and was never seen by the ant again.

MORAL: Do not judge by appearances.

天文学家

The Astronomer(天文学家)

An astronomer(天文学家) used to go out every night to look at the stars.

One night, while looking up to the skies, he fell into a well.

Someone who heard his cries, ran up to him, and said,

"While you are trying to learn about the mysteries(奥秘) of heaven, you miss the common things under your feet."

MORAL: We should never look so high that we miss seeing the things around us.

The Bald(秃头的) Man and the Fly

A fly bit the head of a bald(秃头的) man who, trying to kill it, only succeeded in hitting himself hard on the head.

Escaping, the fly made fun of him, saying,

"You who have wished to revenge(报复), even with death, the bite of a tiny insect,

see what harm you have done to yourself in the process!"

The bald(秃头的) man replied, "I hurt myself by mistake(无意中), but you hurt me on purpose.

I wish that I could have killed you, even if by doing so I had hurt myself even more!"

MORAL: Dont hurt yourself to get revenge(报复) on another.

在昨天的故事里，蚂蚁嘲笑正在蜕变的毛虫，毛虫最后化茧成蝶，变成了一只漂亮的蝴蝶，这个故事告诉我们不要以面貌来评价一个人。

The Ants and the Grasshopper(蝗虫)

It was a fine winter day, and the ants were storing away(贮存) all the food they had collected in the summer.

A very hungry grasshopper(蝗虫) passed by and asked them for something to eat.

The ants asked him, "Why didnt you collect any food during the summer?"

He replied, "I didnt have any spare timeI spent the days singing."

Then they said, "If you were foolish enough to sing all summer, you must dance hungry to bed in the winter."

MORAL: Prepare today for the needs of tomorrow.

The Scorpion(蝎子) and the Frog

A scorpion(蝎子) and a frog met beside a river.

The scorpion(蝎子) asked the frog,

"Please, Mr. Frog, would you agree to carry me across this river on your back, since you are such a good swimmer?"

The frog replied, "How can I trust you? You sting(蛰) and kill many animals.

How do I know you wont sting(蛰)me?"

The scorpion(蝎子) said, "Dont be silly. Why would I want to sting(蛰)you?

After all, if I did sting(蛰) you, then I would die as well as you.

Do you think I am stupid?"

So the frog agreed to carry the scorpion(蝎子) across the river on his back.

But halfway across the river, the scorpion(蝎子) stung(蛰) the frog.

The frogs muscles(肌肉) no longer worked, and he started to sink.

Just before he drowned(淹死), he asked the scorpion(蝎子),

"Why did you sting(蛰) me, since if I die, you die as well?"

The scorpion(蝎子) replied, "I cant help it, its in my nature."

MORAL: Dont expect people to change.

Previous Story

在昨天的故事中，孔雀拥有迷人的羽毛，但是正是这些厚重的羽毛增加了其重量，使其飞不高；燕子的羽毛尽管不漂亮，但是可以帮助燕子飞得很高。这个故事告诉我们，远离浮夸的外表会走得更远更轻松。

The Rich Man and the Tanner(制革工人)

A tanner(制革工人) started his business next to a rich mans house.

The rich man found the smell coming from the tanning business so extremely unpleasant that he told the tanner(制革工人)he must go.

The tanner(制革工人) said that he would, but kept putting off(推迟) the date when he was supposed to move.

The rich man had to speak to him several times about it;

and every time the tanner(制革工人) said he would move very soon.

This went on for some time, till at last the rich man got so used to(习惯) the smell that he no longer noticed it,

and allowed the tanner(制革工人) to stay where he was.

MORAL: With time, one can get used to anything.
