Lianne Dalziel, Mayor of Christchurch
Dr.Jian Yang, National List MP
Mr. Tang Yu-Shiun and Madame Zhang Huiying
Mr. Jimmy Chen, Councillor of Christchurch City Council
Ms. Carolyn Robertson, Head of Libraries and Information
Distinguished guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Good afternoon!

It gives me pleasure to attend the opening ceremony of the Exhibition of Calligraphy by Tang Yu-Shiun on behalf of the Chinese Consulate General in Christchurch.

First, I would like to give my sincere respect to Mr. Tang. I haven’t met him before, yet I have known about him. In particular, from the media reports of the precious exhibitions in Shanghai and Ningbo I get to know more about him, I can feel that the previous exhibitions were warmly received.

Secondly, I’d like to say something about Chinese calligraphy. Chinese calligraphy contains the most important part of the quintessence of traditional Chinese culture, so it is great treasure of Chinese culture and has been favored by men of letters all the time in Chinese history. The works of iconic calligraphers were amazingly welcomed by calligraphy admirers and collectors. Chinese characters are the carriers of Chinese calligraphy while calligraphy is the beautified expression of the characters. A famous Chinese scholar said: Chinese characters are wonderful in three dimensions: the wonderful meanings move the hearts, the wonderful sounds please the ears and the wonderful form please the eyes. As for calligraphy, he also said: Chinese calligraphy is the gem of Chinese treasure. It is not a poem but has the rhyme of poems, not a painting but has the beauty of paintings, not a dance but has the rhythm of dances, not music but has the melody of music.

Apart from that, calligraphy has a lot of practical values. Based on common writing, calligraphy,is the facade of a person. Good writing can benefit one greatly in life. It is also an elegant art. Calligraphers enjoy the charm when writing, getting pleasure, fostering traits and cultivating temperament.Calligraphy collectors enjoy themselves by owing the works, putting up facade and upgrading tastes. Learning calligraphy is an effective means of health preservation. When writing, one has to concentrate himself on it, forgetting about all the worries and unpleasant things. So most renowned calligraphers lived a long life. Master Tang is a persuasive example. He is close to 100 years old, yet he is hale and hearty, like a man in his sixties or seventies.

In the past hundred years, gratifying changes have taken place in China. And Chinese culture has been increasingly received worldwide. Mr. Tang is is a witness of the centenary changes of China. Through numerous calligraphy works, he expresses deep love of China, records China’s great changes and carries forward the fine Chinese culture.

Mr Tang has dedicated himself to calligraphy for decades and great accomplishments have been made. He is not only a contributor to the promoting of Chinese calligraphy, but also a contributor to the cultural exchanges between China and other countries. Mr. Tang applies himself to calligraphy and holds this Exhibition at the age of 99. Such persistence and perseverance command admiration.

The Exhibition in Christchurch will surely help more locals to understand and eventually love Chinese calligraphy. It is my hope that all cultures in New Zealand could learn from each other and benefit each other.

Last but not least, I would like to express my appreciation to those organizations and persons who have made the exhibition possible for their efforts. I wish the exhibition a geat success and wish Mr. Tang and Madame Zhang good health and a happy life.

Thank you all!
