Insects awaken (惊蛰)

What does the solar term Insects Awaken mean? 节气“惊蛰”是什么意思？

The word 驚蟄 means the awakening of hibernating insects. 驚 is to startle and 蟄 means hibernating insects. Traditional Chinese folklore / 'fəʊklɔː /民间传说 says that during Jingzhe, thunderstorms will wake up the hibernating insects, which implies that the weather is getting warmer.

Insects awaken (惊蛰) or Jingzhe is one of the twenty-four solar terms,Insects awaken soon after the first day of spring.立春后很快就是惊蛰 

With the coming of Insects awaken (惊蛰) the temperature rises rapidly and the small animals and insets would be waking out for normal activities.  

 

The term of Insects awaken (惊蛰) remindes people the spread of a variety of diseases病害 and insects, weeds in the field which affects the cultivation / ‚kʌltɪ'veɪʃən/耕作, people need to start the pest control and weeding works.

By observing the sun's movement across the sky,ancient Chinese divided the year into the following 24 sections know as Solar Terms.

The "Start of Spring", "Start of Summer", "Start of Autumn" and "Start of Winter" divided a year into four seasons.

The "Vernal Equinox" and "Autumn Equinox" are when the days and nights are equal length, while the "Summer Solstice" sees the longest days and the shortest nights in the Northern Hemisphere半球. It is the contrary / 'kɒntrəri/相反的 on the day of the "Winter Solstice".

What are the 24 Solar Terms?

The 24 Solar Terms are part of the traditional Chinese calendar. It was originated along the Yellow River even before the Qin Dynasty (221-207 BC), and was almost settled down in the Han Dynasty (202 BC - 220).

It is also known as the "fifth great invention" of China, coming after paper-making, printing, gunpowder and compass.

In the ancient days, they are important instructions for the agricultural production as well as people's daily lives. Starting with the "Start of Spring" and ending with "Major Cold", each season was divided into six solar terms, each with a time span of 15 days.

The "Start of Spring", "Start of Summer", "Start of Autumn" and "Start of Winter" divided a year into four seasons.

The "Vernal Equinox" and "Autumn Equinox" are when the days and nights are equal length, while the "Summer Solstice" sees the longest days and the shortest nights in the Northern Hemisphere半球. It is the contrary / 'kɒntrəri/相反的 on the day of the "Winter Solstice".

There are also some other solar terms which marks things like temperature, precipitation/ prɪ‚sɪpɪ'teɪʃ ə n/降水量, growth of the crops, and weather conditions.

From generation to generation, the experience in farming and daily life has been passed. Many farmers still rely on the solar terms now to decide what should do in the fields.

The 24 solar terms, based on the sun's position in the zodiac, were created by farmers in ancient China to guide the agricultural affairs and farming activities. The 24 solar terms reflect the changes in climate, natural phenomena/ fɪ'nɒmɪnən/现象, agricultural production农业生产, and other aspects 方面of human life, including clothing, food, housing, and transportation. The 24 solar terms play important roles and have greatly influenced people's basic needs in life, and they still have an important function nowadays.

The terms consist of 12 pairs of major大节气 (sectional) and minor小节气 (middle) solar terms interlaced 交错的with each other., namely即是The 24 solar terms embody / ɪm'bɒdi/代表 a complete circle of the sun and divide the circle into 24 segments, with each segment being about half a month long. In both the lunar and solar calendars, the Gregorian /ɡrɪˈɡɔːrɪən/ calendar 公历 date of each solar term is basically fixed, with minor differences of within one or two days.

Meaning of the 24 Solar Terms

From the names of the 24 solar terms, we can see that the division of the solar terms has fully considered the variation / ‚veəri'eɪʃən/ 注意发音 of natural phenomena, such as seasons, climates and phenology./fɪˈnɒlədʒɪ/ 生物气候学

The solar terms known as Start of Spring, Start of Summer, Start of Autumn, and Start of Winter are used to reflect the change of seasons, dividing the year into four seasons of exactly three months. While this fits an ideal pattern of dates, it does not reflect observable/ ‚ɒbzə'veɪʃən/观察 reality in most of China.

The solar terms of Vernal /ˈvɜːnəl/ 春天的 Equinox/ˋikwə͵nɑks /春分, Autumnal/ɔːˈtʌmnəl/ 秋天的 Equinox秋分, Summer Solstice /ˈsɒlstɪs/ 夏至and Winter Solstice冬至 are divided from an astronomical/ˌæstrəˈnɒmɪkəl/天文的 aspect方面, reflecting the turning point 转折点 of the variation vɛrɪˋeʃən / 变化of the altitude 海拔of the sun.

Minor Heat, 小暑Major Heat大暑, Limit of Heat处暑, Minor Cold, and Major Cold reflect the changes of temperature in different periods.

Clear and Bright清明, Rain Water, Grain Rain, Minor Snow, and Major Snow, White Dew, 白露Cold Dew, 寒露and Frost Descent 霜降 reflect the phenomenon of precipitation/ prɪ‚sɪpɪ'teɪʃ ə n/降水量 , indicating the time and intensity / ɪn'tensɪti/强度 of rainfall, snowfall, dew, and frost.

Small Full (Grain)小满 and Grain in Ear芒种 reflect the maturity and harvest time of crops, while Awakening of Insects reflects observed insect activity.

Origin

As early as the Spring and Autumn Period (770–476 BC), Chinese ancestors had already established two major solar terms, ri nan zhi (日南至 'Sun South Most') and ri bei zhi (日北至 'Sun North Most').

As of the end of the Warring States Period (475–221 BC), eight key solar terms (Start of Spring, Vernal Equinox, Start of Summer, Summer Solstice, Start of Autumn, Autumnal Equinox, Start of Winter and Winter Solstice) marking the four seasons, were established according to the different positions of the sun and changes in natural phenomena.

The rest of the solar terms were initiated /ɪˈnɪʃɪˌeɪt/发起 in the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC–24 AD). Hence 从此most terms refer to the climate of Xi'an, capital of the Han Dynasty.

I gathered up a few things and set them out in a couple of basins, then I gathered a few twigs.A large snowball that we’d rolled provided the perfect body parts for the snowman.

Max poked the tiwgs on the both sides of the snowman as his hands.

I put some snow in a bottle then add some water in it.I explained how the snow had absorbed the water like a sponge, and Max felt it, and observed that it was quite icy.

🗺Thoughts:放学后跟我说今天他们比赛说故事了。自己一点都没有紧张。他们班去了两个男生两个女生，他说他是他们班男生中说的最好的。女生说的比他好。其他班的男生女生很多都比他说的好。还挺有自知之明。😂说只有他一个人，老师没听他说完故事就不让他讲了，其他人都讲完了。也没有人鼓掌。是有多冗长🤣.

总之感谢老师给个机会锻炼下，也希望别拖班里太多后腿。😭
