About the Exhibition
The London based ceramic artist Siu Kwan Wong (Kwan) is coming to New York this summer. From both her unique, earthen, unglazed brick clay pots and her precise, well-recognised Treasure Boxes, to an exciting collection of her long-loved Teddy Bears, and some completely different styles of tablewares, Kwan is going to present a diverse selection of her handicrafts made purely from silt.
Each artist has their own techniques, thoughts and voice on their creativities. What added to Kwans pottery is her emotional responses to her surroundings. Almost like an on-going dairy, Kwan uses clays to record those certain moments, different seasons, the real world, as well as her dream ones; rather than a repeatedly production of one style of one kind.
About the Artist
Kwan is fascinated with ageing surfaces. Inspiration is always drawn from antique textile, wooden furniture and historical relics. Correlating with the wabi-sabi concepts, she favours using grogged clays and matt glazes, those reflect well the material characteristics of the suggestions of “natural process” and “the beauty of all unpretentious existence”.
Kwan was born in Hong Kong and trained in London. She was awarded the 2003 National “Medal for Excellence” in Pottery and Design and has achieved the First Class Honours at The University of Art London in 2006.
Following a 5-year assistantship to the renowned UK potter Julian Stair, she established her studio in south-east London since September 2012.
She has been actively taking-part-in teaching, talks and exhibiting in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tai Wan and London.
Her investigation over many years into a wide range of forms, decorative approaches and firing methods has resulted in her first US exhibition: “Purely from Silt”, with Eastern Book Store NYC.
