Python?

From proving the Big Bang theory on the 14-billion-year evolution of the Universe, to building the strategy for millisecond hedge fund trading, Python connects the smartest people all over the world to the most powerful computers on the Earth. As a high-level computing language, Python wins the game over other languages by its robustness, flexibility, and easy-to-learn/use features. From cutting edge tech leaders in Silicon Valley to the distinguished investment banks on Wall Street, more and more groups have been choosing Python as their inner technical ecosystem and culture.

(Python for Beginners)

This course will use Python 3.6 and cover the basic elements in Python programming, including syntax, variables, lists, dictionaries, tuples, user defined functions, classes, and input/output system. It will also be focused on building the hands-on experience of problem solving by tackle the real-life programming projects. Going through this course, the students will initiate a healthy and sustainable way to communicate with the computers in Python.

No programming skill is required. After finishing this course, the students will be able to take a more advanced course for Python programming (see “Python Advanced” for details).

(Python Advanced)

This course will use Python 3.6 and will cover more advanced topics of Python programming, including data processing, visualization, basic machine learning libraries, predictive modeling. It will be substantially focused on the hands-on experience of problem solving by getting involved into many case-study projects from various industries. Going through this course, the students will build skills to handle the data from real life and the storytelling via data visualization. Meanwhile, this course will open a for the students to several industries of business, helping the students start career planning for the future.

Basic Python programming skills required (see the course “Python for beginners” for details).

Zhen Hou (Zak) graduated with Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He worked as postdoctoral researcher in UC Davis, Caltech, and the University of Chicago, analyzing the astronomy data from satellite and telescopes to investigate the Big Bang theory of our Universe. He also worked in Adler Planetarium in weekends to present the astrophysics knowledge to the public. In 2017, Zak became a data scientist and have been working on data analytics and predictive modeling for various industries, including manufacturing, insurance risk management, and real estate investment. Zak is enthusiastic in sharing the knowledge of programming and data science with the community. He co-organized the monthly PyData meetups in downtown Chicago area.
